Looks like the IOM finally got a speed camera installed yesterday, if the date of this article is correct.

SPEED CAMERA APPEARS IN BALLAUGH
WHEN is a speed camera not a speed camera?
When the Department of Transport refers to it by another name.

Motorists in Ballaugh were baffled after the appearance of this device, that looks identical to those used to catch and criminalise speeding drivers in the UK.

The DoT finally admitted on Friday that it would photograph speeding drivers – but insists it is merely a safety camera.

But it didn't last very long..

Speedcam damage 23 May 2006 09:59:19

Vandals have struck at the newly installed 'safety camera' at Ballaugh Bridge.

A tyre was placed on top of the unit and set alight.

Police and fire services were called out at around 1.30 am this morning.

The blaze was quickly extinguished and at this stage it is thought damage is limited to external blackening of the camera's casework

Ramsey police are carrying out enquiries

The DoT says the camera, which will be up and running in six weeks, stems from an 'alarming increase' in accidents at Ballaugh bridge.

Last year there were eight accidents, compared with just two in the previous two years.

The department hopes the camera 'will have a positive effect on excessive speeds and that there will be a reduction in casualties.

RTTM fodder

Why do these cretins try to hang statistical credibility onto such tiny sample sizes?

TBH, that comment probably applies to every camera site in the UK. None will have sample sizes for serious accidents that go far into double figures, surely?

The article states that nobody will be prosecuted, just told off - which is a much better idea!

Except that visitors from the UK will not know that, and will probably panic brake when the spot the grey box...

Because they can.
99% of the population believe what they say without question - the other 1% can be discredited.

Yeah, until the cameras become calibrated (or gain approval?)
