Cameras for loan (Yeovil)

Added - Wednesday, 13 April 2005 15:29

Yeovil police now have six speed cameras which they can lend out to Community Speedwatch schemes.

The Community Speedwatch scheme can be set up in any area where people are concerned about speeding and willing to give up their free time to assist the police in reducing the speed of road users.

A minimum of four people are needed for each area and they can operate in teams of two people with a speed gun.

Community Speedwatch members can record details of speeding motorists and pass the details of the vehicle to the police, who in turn will issue the drivers letters of warning.

If areas are highlighted to be of high concern then police may take more formal action.

PC Alan Ball said: “Schemes used to have to buy their own speed guns, however now we have some we can lend to them on an intermittent basis.

“We hope this will encourage more schemes to be set up in the Yeovil area and be a warning to motorists not the speed.

“Unfortunately we are unable to monitor all the streets in our area and we are asking for help from local residents.

“Full training is given and a local company has offered to provide some schemes with free fluorescent jackets.

“This means there is virtually no cost to set up a scheme – all we need is people’s time.”

But how will these 'vigilantees' feel when a few drivers stop and argue with them? Not aggressively, mind you, just firmly and assertively.
Am I alone in finding it strange that the police service should encourage these vigilantees, whilst warning against other forms of 'local protection groups' to fight anti-social behaviour, drug dealing, burglary, etc.?
What is interesting is the way senior police officers prioritise alleged offences. My wife has a friend who works in a civvie telephonist in a police station. One day there was a call to say a possible drug-dealer had been spotted outside a local school. The response was that no-one was available to investigate. A couple of days later another call reported seeing a disqualified driver's car in the town and two cars were sent to try to apprehend the alleged offender. It turned out that the car was the disqual driver's, but someone else was driving it quite legally. By the way, that was in Hertfordshire.
Who set's the priorities?

this is part of the scamerati's attempt to show possitive support for speed cameras and speed enforcement.

They do a look at the effects of speed presentation and show lots of carnage, tell everyone to think of the children and sign up pensioners and mums to show support for the mobile muggers.

just look at how the govt. mobilised the pro wind farm supporters to quiet the anti wind farmers (although I personally support them).

:gatso2: Erm, would this include a joined-up writing test and a proven ability to dance naked around a pentagram under a full moon?

I remember a few years ago a local fellow dressed himself up in a flourescent jacket and stood by the road pointing a hairdryer at passing vehicles.

He was promptly arrested and charged with various offences.
