This is not a wind-up. It happens to be headline of yesterday's "Manchester" - check out "manchesteronline"

Police have now unveiled their gob-stopping latest weapon to cut booze fuelled crime on big city streets.

A 1p lollipop!

Officers plan to dish out these lollies to revellers as they leave the pubs and clubs in the hope that these lollies will soothe the yobs. :)

In the run-up to Christmas .. the intrepid officers plan to give all clubbers a lolly as they leave their drinking holes as

Quote:
research has found that drinkers given lollipops are less likely to start a fight

There is a safety message on the wrappers and the lolly sticks are made of a special card which collapses should the drinker fall flat on his face.

Doormen and CPSOs will be handing out some of these lollies as well.

It seems Manchester and Glasgow trialled the lollies and found it works!

The idea sounds like a gimmick and a bit barmy.. but when people emerge from clubs and had a bit too much to drink.. they tend to shout and swear a lot. If they are sucking a lollipop - then they are a lot quieter and it can diffuse a situation.

It reduces the verbal aggression and makes people feel good.

We are not saying these lollies will reduce crime. but we are hoping it will calm people down a bit

Well.. the sucking can calm. Why a child is soothed by a dummy or a thumb suck

Ah! So that's why we have the public information in the press as to how to clean our teeth properly!

They plan to dish out 50,000 lollies in Manchester at weekend peak times over the next couple of months.

This approach has been endorsed by Attorney General ever since 1951. CPS Code
