Earlier tonight I was the second vehicle in a queue at a set of traffic lights at an urban T-junction, where a road branches off to the left. There's a queue of about six cars facing waiting to turn right.

In front of me is a young woman in a 106 or Saxo. She lets every single one of the cars turn right across her path. Needless to say, this is accompanied by a growing crescendo of horn-blowing, not started by me.

I wouldn't have been surprised if the lights had turned red before anyone got through. And as it happens, right-turners at this junction have their own dedicated phase anyway.

Did she really think that courtesy on the roads requires such odd behaviour?

I would make a very good guess that the offending driver held a New Zealand driving licence - why? because her actions are the law here. When turning left you have to give way to traffic coming from the opposite direction that is turning right into the same road. I've been here over six years putting up with this rubbish, and yet again all motoring organisations and professionals are clamouring to dump this rule which is a load of s*1t, and it causes untold problems with visitors - (I might add that most local drivers don't even apply the rule correctly - for example if the road that both drivers are turning into is two lane the "give way" doesn't apply as both drivers turn into their own lanes - most people still give way).

I still can't work out why the rules were changed here (in the late
eighties), possibly something to do with Australia - as far as I know New Zealand with 4 million people is the only place left that still tries to use it. The only people who benefit are panel beaters - so beware if you intend to drive in New Zealand - and give way to traffic coming from your right when turning.
