Yesterday whilst on my way up the highway from hell (M6) I stopped at Keele services for a P and a sarnie.
In the carpark a car pulled up next to me and the driver asked if I spoke Italian. I've come across this loads of times recently so I said to the driver sarcastically "Don't tell me, you're just on your way home from a fashion show and have some surplus stock right?" He wagged his finger at me and drove off across the carpark and approached someone else, as I walked by I could see a poly bag of clothes on the back seat
Anyone else come across this? Must be a scam, but I've done a google search and haven't come up with anything similar. Perhaps he was for real?

The 2 scams I regularly get at Corley services (M6) are surplus stock of watches (left over) and a young girl telling a loooong story about how her boyfriend has just dumped her at the services and she needs £20 to get home. She has a really short memory cos she keeps trying to con me with this one...

Noticed a few services on M6 have notices warning about watch salesmen

A friend & I had a similar experience a year or so ago at a service station on the M1.

Some wide boy thought he could convince us that his crappy imitation watches were worth upwards in the region of £800 a go and because he was returning from an exhibition and they were only for show, he could let us have one at £200 each.

I don't think english was his first language because he just wouldn't leave us alone no matter how many times we told him we weren't interested, the guy eventually got the message when my friend reverted to his native tounge of 'universalese' and smacked him in the mouth for trying to take the piss

I had that exact same thing thing happen to me at Keele about six years ago.
An 'Italian' selling surplus stock to avoid 'export duty' and to cover the cost of his hire car.
I'm not remotely interested in clothes let alone brands like Gucci & Prada
and I really p****d him off when I offered £10 for the lot.

A guy at work bought a "leather" jacket off one such salesman.

Cheap because it smelt of oil due to hving a small spillage in the boot, salesman's tale.

Odd how the leather melted when I applied a soldering iron to it. (on an area not normally visible of course).

I had electronic goods offerered to me at Birch on the M62(W) and then again the day after by the same people on the eastbound side! What got me was they were so brazen by parking right outside the main entrance! Surely the MSA's could be a little more proactive in that department? I know they can't see everything, but when it;s right under their noses the very least I would have expected is that they moved them on.

I would have thought that with all the CCTV cameras about stopping this sort of thing would be easy.

Obviously not the sort of crime they can be arsed with. Much better to wack out parking fines to people who over stay the limit by 5 mins.

I have been approached twice at M6 services in the past year - about 6 months apart if I recall correctly. Same story - exhibition, given as bonus and wanted to avoid excess baggage at airport.

I wouldn't buy anyway :-)

I think it's just a lack of manpower - they would need professional security guards and they probably only have half a dozen that are busy moving cash around. You can't really expect the tea lady to go out and shake a mop given that some of these people could become violent (I know some are just failed Kirby vacuum cleaner salesman but I bet some are into smuggling and whatnot)

I think a lot of the watches are the "faux high end" brands like Klaus Kobec, Zeitner, Claude Valentini and Krug Baumen. They place a few adverts in expensive publications with a RRP of £700 and then use the adverts to pursuade people to buy them at a lower price (say £100).

Fair point, but perhaps the manager could have done it? I've just realised though now, Birch East services are the base for the Greater Manchester's traffic police, so I'm really staggered that these crooks would risk dealing stolen (I assume) electrical goods so close to the police!

Talking of security guards, I think the only MSA I've ever seen with them is London Gateway unless anyone can think of anymore?

The odd thing is, this was tried on me in Rome of all bloomin places, some Sascha Distel clone pulled up next to me and started out with the same old bollox.
He wanted 30 Euros for two jackets, they looked OK to me, so I took them, gave him 10 and walked off. He was cussing me from his car as we walked off up the road but was stuffed because...well if you've ever been to Rome you'll know you can't just hop out of your car on any old street
I now wear one, and my wife (who was with me) the other - two jackets for 8 quid. OK, might have been nicked but
