Am I alone in thinking press freedom to report the results of these attacks minute by minute is feeding the terrorists?
I am not being critical of the media, but the reason that people might wish to avoid London in the future, is because of the widespread reporting of a terrorist attack. However, despite the regretable loss of life (35 reported so far), the impact in terms of deaths per annum is way below that of deaths by heart disease, smoking related illnesses, car accidents, and storm related deaths.
By reporting the attacks in this minute by minute manner, you are extending the impact over a whole day, and stretching people's emotions out on a wire.
The effect of terrorism would be lessened if you simply reported the facts the following day, in its entirety, with accurate figures. At the moment, the gaps in the facts that are being reported are leading to people summising what MIGHT be the truth, but which tommorrow morning might be nothing like. Casualty figures on BBC today have been 2 then 5 then 7, each new figure increasing the stress caused. It's now 35, and no doubt will be higher by tomorrow.

Last week I sent this to the BBC after a report on Hostage taking in Iraq. It has suddenly become pertinent again.

Sir.
I have long felt that our press freedom is actually a threat to our national well being, and your report on hostage taking confirms this.
Your reporter said the whole nation was affected by watching the video's, and so hostage taking was here to stay.
Surely if the videos were kept from the public, the effect they have would be lessened, and the effectiveness of the tactic reduced.
I appreciate you can find them on the internet, but in my experience, people only look because the press tells them they are there!

We should be prepared to forgoe our diet of instant news from competing networks, who seem proud of their ability to up date us each minute and stop giving the terrorists what they crave - a public perception of power.
None of us here would be any worse off if a press blackout were imposed, providing people could contact their immediate family to report their safety - and even that is stretching things under some circumstances!
Since I started typing this it has become 36 killed. Why report that figure - it is not going to be correct in even ten minutes, yet all over the country people are going to be saying "Oh dear" as they watch and wait. Get the FULL picture tommorrow!
