There's an excellent piece here by former cabinet minister Peter Lilley:

Global Warming as a 21st Century Religion

Quote:
G.K. Chesterton said that "when people stop believing in orthodox religion, rather than believe in nothing, they will believe in anything". One of the ersatz religions which fills the void in recent years is belief in Catastrophic Man-Made Global Warming. It claims to be based on science. But it has all the characteristics of an eschatological cult.

It has its own priesthood and ecclesiastical establishment - the United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change; they alone can interpret its sacred scriptures - the Assessment Reports; it anathematises as 'deniers' anyone who casts doubt on its certainties; above all it predicts imminent doom if we do not follow its precepts and make the sacrifices it prescribes.

I always though Brake might turn into a religious organisation. (which is the best for tax evasion?)

My views do not represent Safespeed but those of a driver who has driven for 39 yrs, in all conditions, at all times of the day & night on every type of road and covered well over a million miles, so knows a bit about what makes for safety on the road, what is really dangerous and needs to be observed when driving and quite frankly, the speedo is way down on my list of things to observe to negotiate Britain's roads safely, but I don't expect some fool who sits behind a desk all day to appreciate that.

And TAX EVASION, that's another Cult that has developed under this co alition Gov't, with the High Priest ( Osborne) denouncing all any ways to avoid filling his coffers. That's why there's been so many new methods of detecting those who try to avoid payment. ANPR- it's said to prevent criminals using the roads, but could one of it's main purposes be to catch those who avoid VED. And those without insurance are also guity of not paying the tax on a policy.HMG is skint and HMRC are as efficient in collecting as BA are in catching imigrants ,that ath whole thing is a joke.

HMRC are the ideal organisation to demonstrate "corporate capture".
Most of their senior managment are ex Big Four accountancy seat-warmers.
Most of their ex-managers are now in the employ of either large companies, or Big Four accountancy companies.
And you expect them to be gamekeepers ?
All of the tax avoidance schemes currently marketed had to be cleared by HMRC first..
But if you want classic....look at the rail network.....a case of massive subsidy theft......with tens of billions being milked and paid to train "companies" that immediately remove it offshore. Just look at virgin trains...(and then look at virgin health....)
I very much doubt that the current chancellor has any intention of cracking-down on evasion or avoidance....too many of his future options would be scuppered.....the same goes for Ed balls.....
And the government is far from broke.....broke happens when I have no money....they can always print a load....which is what they did when their moneyed mates needed a few hundred billion to bail them out.
Nope. They ALL know that the economy is not going to improve. So austerity is the only game in town.

56 years after it was decided it was needed, the Bedford Bypass is nearing completion. The last single carriageway length of it.We have the most photogenic mayor though, always being photographed doing nothing
