Police camera van in crash
11:47am Tuesday 16th April 2013 in Romsey

AN investigation is underway after a police speed camera van was involved in collision with a car at Nursling.

The incident happened near the M271 slip road exit of the Romsey Golf Course roundabout on the A3057.

A 32-year-old Romsey woman who was driving a Volkswagen Golf was taken to hospital for a check-up after complaining of back pain following the accident.

Her two-year-old son, who was passenger in the car, was also taken to Southampton General for a check-up. It's understood, the woman's car was heading towards the M271 when the collision happened shortly before 12.45pm on Sunday.

The police vehicle, a Volkswagen Transporter van was travelling in the same direction and the male driver escaped injury.

A police spokesman said: “A full investigation in now underway into what happened. It would appear the police van was travelling behind the car.”
Dare I wonder if he was distracted? !

Hope everyone is OK.

People behave differently if in the presence of a Police vehicle and perhaps she saw it was a Police van, and braked and if he was driving too closely, he might easily have hit her ? (Just a guess).

I'm very familiar with this roundabout and I don't think the issue was braking. I have assumed that they were both following the same route from the north to the M271 with the van behind. Here is the Streetview of the entrance to the roundabout from the North (which has two lanes).

It is all too common for people wanting to go down the M271 to stay in the left lane despite the motorway actually being to the right and the second exit off the roundabout. If you go forward on Streetview you will see that the most likely scenario is that the van was on the outside lane of the entry and that they came together on the exit to the M271 with the van cutting off the left corner expecting the Golf to have taken the first exit.

I have seen near misses countless times here and I always hold back on passing cars on the roundabout for this reason. The fact it was a van with limited left side rearward visibility makes this more likely.
