I have been wondering where and how people 'check the weather before you travel' ?
How many people check it and where do they go for the best and most accurate info.
I recently (on the way back North) used a mix of local websites [ ] to route locations including using my SatNAv that offers that (excellent) facility, Met Office to receiving Hiways Agency Updates from the HA directly via email.
Met Office are now reporting a mild New Year : ... r-forecast
An example of the info from the Highways Agency today :
Highways Agency wrote:
Strong Winds | Northern England
Road users in the North East and North West regions of England are being advised to check the weather forecast and road conditions before they travel today, as strong winds are forecast for these regions.
As a result of the strong winds the Highways Agency has issued an Amber Alert for high-sided vehicles, caravans and motorbikes which are advised to take extra care when travelling due to the increased risk of vehicles being blown over.
The Highways Agency, which is responsible for motorways and other major roads in England, is working closely with the Met Office to monitor weather conditions and maintain safe roads and reliable journeys.
Drivers are advised to plan for their journey before they set out, checking the forecast and road conditions and to leave extra time if travel conditions are poor, and to delay their journey if the weather becomes severe.

Further information can be obtained by listening to travel news on your car radio. Up-to-date information on road conditions on England's motorways and trunk roads is available on the Agency website at or by calling 0300 123 5000.
For information on weather conditions, visit the Met Office website or listen to local radio.
Further updates will be posted as available.

Is this where everyone goes ?
Who do you trust?
Samandben was trying to get hold of the local data that Councils obtain for icy conditions and gritting considerations - does anyone know if he managed to obtain that and how informative it was - has anyone else sought it out (great idea!) ?
