The Facts You Need to Know About the Hazard Perception Test on Your Learners Test
By Ben Smith on October 9, 2011

The learners test is a one of most important steps in getting a probationary license. It is not only a prerequisite for the final driving exam. The learners test specifically the hazard perception test also helps you prepare for any situation you might encounter on the road. There are few things that you need to know about this essential test.

The learners test or theory test is an online exam that you can take using a computer. The test consists of a multiple choice exam and driving simulation. The written part of the test will tackle a few basic rules and safety tips about driving. The later part of the learners test entails you going through 14 interactive video simulations. You will be identifying spotting possible hazards per video. Your score will be determined on how fast you determine and react to the developing hazards by clicking on the mouse. The highest possible score is 5, while the lowest is 0.

Passing both the written exam and video simulations are the key elements in acing your driving exam. If you fail one of the tests, you can retake it again until you pass both. Although it may take a couple of tries, the lessons in the test will really come in handy when you take the official test.

A good majority of people fail the online learners test because they are not familiar with how everything works. The online test is actually quite easy especially if you take the time to read through and understand what is needed before taking it. This way, you will have time to prepare and study how to ace the test.

A hazard is anything that can cause you to crash. The most common ones are vehicles on the road and pedestrians. Taking the simple online hazard perception test will give you a feel for what you might encounter while driving and how to avoid a crash.

The hazard perception test will help you spot and anticipate possible scenarios that might cause you to crash the vehicle. You will be given scenarios where you will need to react swiftly and prevent accidents from ever happening. Driving at a safe speed and keeping a close eye on the road are two elements that what makes a responsible driver.

You will be given a wide array of driving scenarios that will challenge your awareness on the road. The test will focus on situations where the most common accidents happen. The test will include narrow roads, intersections and a couple of moving vehicles. All the different driving scenarios will help you understand how to avoid accidents from happening and learn how to drive responsibly. If you do run into a situation where you are not sure, select the safest option available.

You should be at least 17 years old to take the online learners test. Also, your exam results should be used within a year. If you were not able to use the test, you will be required to take the exam again and present the new results during your official driving test.

Some interesting info ... although for experienced motorists I think the HP test is very hard as it assumes that (if it is like the UK one this is!) you are only 'seeing' the most obvious and nearest features. Hitting the buttons at certain frames helps to gain higher points and too early is also an error which seems most odd to me, as not everyone that takes the test is un-experienced !
