headline in tonight's "Manchester!" informs me that quarter of million quid has been sehlled out on a "passenger waiting environment" in Manchester.

This state of the art bus shelter has CCTV to film you as you wait for the bus...is 15 yardss from the actual bus stop - so you get wet when you walk to bus ... and it is near to the bus station as well... and people can wait under cover at the Eccles Interchange...

On the other hand - you can be surveyed whilst you wait, sit down and have sufficient lighting to read the "M.E.N"

Bemused passengers are amazed - "Yet to see anyone use it" and "Total wast of money" "Spend it on punctual buses"

"If you sit in the shelter - driver does not see you and does not stop!" like this one- it amused me

[i[]sort of defeats the object here of getting me out of Jag and onto bus [/i]

""250.000 on seats, fluorescent lighting. perch seating? Where'e the gold it's embossed wi' then?"

Just a few of the comments in the paper .. it has amused me... though I'd share with the safepseed world at large...

JJ... quick - it's vandal proof ... go place some of your posters there.... It's OK - no-one will read them.... But on the other hand - they will be lit up in the shelter - if you made them a little more interesting with a bit more relevance... who knows?

I knew this was going to be bad as soon as I read "Passenger Waiting Environment"

I read the first paragraph of your post out to my GF and she assumed I was referring to some new development at Manchester Airport!

You could not make it up - could you? My wife tells me it even got a mention on the Vine prog at lunch time. Good folk of Eccles are in state of shock over it.... they cannot believe how much has been spent on them....

If it had heaters, a telly, dvd, internet access.. could understand it.. but this it just a bus shelter with a CCTV cam and some hard chairs...

They must be after a prize in the "Bus Industry Awards" for the best Bus Shelter category.
I kid you not - the prize is a Cumbria Crystal Punch bowl, engraved with the BIA logo and the winners name!
I could have sold them one cheaper!!
They'll be hard put to beat the one on the Shetlands, which has comfy chairs, a kettle and displays of local crafts!

We have some in Bradford which cost about the same, these even talk to you.

No doubt reassuring you the bus is coming and hopefully there won't already be a wheelchair or pram on it already.
