The Tories standing up for our rights :o
Stricter tests for stop and search powers have been announced by the home secretary after being ruled unlawful by the European Court of Human Rights.

Home Secretary Theresa May said the government would not appeal
Police will now not be allowed to use the powers unless they "reasonably suspect" a person of being a terrorist.

The court ruled on the power to search without suspicion under Section 44 of the Terrorism Act 2000 last month.

Human rights campaigners Liberty said it had "criminalised and alienated more people than it ever protected".

The ruling followed a case brought by two people who had been stopped by police near an arms fair in London in 2003.

'Concerns over powers'

In a Commons statement, Home Secretary Theresa May said: "The first duty of government is to protect the public but that duty must never be used as a reason to ride roughshod over our civil liberties."

She said the European Court's judgement had found the use of Section 44 amounted to "the violation of the right to a private life".

They paid no attention before, they'll pay no attention now.
They have only been "repealed" for pedestrians, not for car drivers.

Quote:
Theresa May told the Commons she will immediately limit Section 44 of the Terrorism Act 2000 so members of public can only be stopped if officers "reasonably suspect" they are terrorists. The threshold of suspicion will bring the Act into line with traditional stop and search powers.

So they'll reasonably suspect you instead of just maybe suspecting you.

And they're only doing it because the case went against them.....even though it wasn't them....ish.

56 years after it was decided it was needed, the Bedford Bypass is nearing completion. The last single carriageway length of it.We have the most photogenic mayor though, always being photographed doing nothing
