Hi all,

It's come to my attention that one particular user has created a second user account. Why do people do this? I want to operate a serious discussion forum, yet we have bizarre personalities who just aren't interested in using the service "properly".

Has anyone got any comments or advice?

Should we attempt to ban anyone with multiple user accounts?

On other forums I've frequented, people have tended to do this when they forget their password. For some reason they think it's easier to re-register than get a new password on their existing account. Don't know if this is the case with the user you have identified, but it can be one cause.

Also, as I recall, when registering on your forum, the only really defining piece of data was my e-mail address. If it is this that leads you to believe a single user has multiple accounts, could it be an e-mail address is being shared by two or more people, but they wish to have different accounts on your forums?

There are occasions when this particular bulletin board software spits it's dummy at hotmail accounts. That may be a reason. I had to set up a couple and ended up using a non hotmail account to get round it.

Balance in everything ;)

I really don't mind if someone fails to register and has another go.

If someone forgets their password, there's a procedure for getting a new password to the registered email account, and that works fine. If someone create another user account because they forgot their password, that's not really a bad thing.

What is a bad thing is when someone decides to waste our time by posing similar or overlapping questions from multiple identities.

You know who you are. Behave please.

How about a points system, if you get 12, then your out....no, on second thoughts..............

Seriousely, why not send a global PM, retiterating the "forgotten password" process, I am sure most people wouldnt do it on purpose. If you supect they are trying to be disruptive, then warn them, any more, then switch em off.

I am new here, but you have a great interactive forum..great stuff.

Other boards I visit just seem to tolerate it. I have heard rumours of people having up to half a dozen active alternate identities and actually conducting conversations with themselves. I have also seen admins of other forums post questions such as "do you two share a PC/connection because you have the same IP address".

If it bothers you as an admin then probably try a PM or email to the latest account.

But like disenchanted says it may be two people sharing a family email address and sharing an IP address doesn't mean it's the same person or same machine.

If they start abusing the system then that would be the time to take action.

No Paul, it contained a few home truths that you choose to ignore in order to prevent reality from intruding into your little fantasy world.

I'd feel more inclined to follow the rules on your forum if you
followed the rules when you drive on public roads.

It isn't necessary to insult people to discuss the issues. Accordingly this is your final warning. Please observe the forum rules and stick to the issues.

In case you haven't noticed, we welcome intelligent debate.

In which case, you'll have no problem responding to my original question: how is "driver response" ( 12mph page ) quantified ( or measured, if you prefer ) ?

Here's the deal. Take it or leave it.

You stick to a single identity.
You keep it polite.
I'll answer any sensible question.

There's nothing new or strange about this. It's just they way it is.
I will not waste my time responding to "multiple personalities" or "sock puppets".

Do you accept the deal?
