I knew this crime is on the increase in the UK but I didn’t know just how much until I did some Net searches; it’s in the thousands each year aparently!

I was prompted to look because I recieved this from a 'trusted' source last week and after pondering on whether it's true, and not being able to find it on the West Midlands Police web site, I concluded it still could or does happen and there's certainly nothing to loose and everything to gain from passing it on...

"Just last weekend on Friday night we parked in a public parking area. As we drove away I noticed a sticker on the rear window of the car. When I took it off, after I got home, it was a receipt for petrol. Luckily my friend told me not to stop as it could be someone waiting for me to get out of the car. Then we received this email yesterday:

WARNING FROM WEST MIDLANDS POLICE

BEWARE OF PAPER ON THE BACK WINDOW OF YOUR VEHICLE NEW WAY TO DO CAR JACKINGS (NOT A JOKE)

You walk across the car parking, unlock your car and get inside. You start the engine and shift into Reverse. When you look into the rear-view mirror to back out of your parking space, you notice a piece of paper stuck to the middle of the rear window. So, you shift into neutral, unlock your doors, and jump out of your car to remove that paper, (or whatever it is), that is obstructing your view. When you reach the back of your car, that is when the carjackers appear out of nowhere, jump into your car and take off. They practically mow you down as they speed off in your car.

And guess what, ladies? I bet your purse is still in the car. So now the carjacker has your car, your home address, your money, and your keys. Your home and your whole identity are now compromised!

BEWARE OF THIS NEW SCHEME THAT IS NOW BEING USED.

If you see a piece of paper stuck to your back window, just drive away. Remove the paper later. And be thankful that you read this e-mail. I hope you will forward this to friends and family, especially to women. A purse contains all kinds of personal information and identification documents, and you certainly do NOT want this to fall into the wrong hands."

This link has some good advice too; lock your doors and don't get too close to the car in front etc.

Thanks Speedy

That's a very interesting website! :o

I was thinking that if someone has found a means whereby they don't have to go to the hassle and confrontation of a conventional Car Jack then it seemed quite plausible, but like I say there was some doubt in my mind.

It's still made me think about what I would do if I see something on my screen and also drawn my attention to other things I should perhaps be doing, like locking my doors when I'm inside the car. I'm sure it's mainly a city problem and I do live in a city.

I was in a multi-story car park the weekend, on level 8 walking to it in the dark, and wondered if someone was lurking. (Maybe I'm just paraniod but I'm sure it's more likely to happen to me than winning the Lottery, yet I do that every week)

Oh and welcome :welcome: I hope you're a Safe Speedy? ;)

I tend to look in my car and check I have a full set of windows before driving after losing 3 side windows off my old escort 3 door. They used to knife the corner and pull the window rubber in two, placing the glass quietly in a garden. They then entered via the window to steal the radio. (this avoided door alarms going off) Another good reason to check your car visually is to see that you have not got an unwanted passenger. Whilst working at a mental hospital, I drove out with one of thier patients hidden in the back of my van.

When parking in any car park I will always choose the location very carefully. At night I will always pick near a lit area as that deters thieves and give me good visuals of my car as I return.

Anyone that had placed any item on my rear window would be eyed with great suspicion as most 'honest' leaflets are on the front under a wiper blade and often accessible without leaving the car.
A good reminder however to always be very careful and be 'sensibly' cautious!
