re; those scamera vans that sit on motorway bridges, does anyone know what their range is?

Regarding lidar/laser guns (the most common mobile camera type): their maximum recommended operating range is about 600m, but they can work a lot further than that (assuming a capable operator).

... plus the operator has to make a 'prior opinion' of speeding, so they have to concentrate on a single vehicle for a 'portion of time' at least.
Bunched traffic can make it hard for them to target a specific vehicle - hence why traffic all bunches up around them.
