The government's powers under the Terrorism Act to stop and search people without grounds for suspicion are illegal, a European court has ruled.

The European Court of Human Rights was giving its ruling in a case involving two people stopped near an arms fair in London in 2003. It said the pair's right to respect for a private and family life under human rights laws had been violated. It awarded them 33,850 euros (£30,399)in compensation. The court said the stop and search powers were "not sufficiently circumscribed" and there were not "adequate legal safeguards against abuse".

Like their "powers" to take and hold DNA from people. Even when they are not prosecuted ?

56 years after it was decided it was needed, the Bedford Bypass is nearing completion. The last single carriageway length of it.We have the most photogenic mayor though, always being photographed doing nothing

Just heard on the news there that if the government lose their appeal that the Home Office will amend the law...

I've never been searched under the anti terrorism law, but I did get a full bag search at airport security when I was last going to London... I found it quite invasive, and I don't know why I was picked, I had a few chargers for phones, camera and ipod, etc, and I'm guessing this was the problem... And to be honest when flying I do half expect to get searched, but I wouldn't fancy getting searched randomly by a police officer whilst going about my daily business...

I was speaking to a friend a while ago, and he was saying one of his mates gets searched every time his car drives past a police car with ANPR... He was caught a couple of years ago with a small amount of Cannabis. His car is now flagged on the system, so he gets searched every time they see him.. Thought this sounded a little bit unfair. He asked the guy one night, "What happens if I don't consent to you searching me/my car" to which plod replied, "We arrest you, bring you down to the station and search the car there instead, your choice." Think he said he'd been searched like 50 times in 2 years...

I was coming back from Jersey on 2nd January and was subject to a full bag search at the local airport. I was actually approached by the border agency officer before I had even entered the customs channel.

Now, I am a middle-aged businessman type and not what you might call an obvious "target" but I thought about this afterwards. The government has just been clamping down on offshore bank accounts and the deadline for declaring your funds had just expired at the end of 2009. I am coming back from the tax haven of Jersey and might have a case of cash with me. Well, it's a possiblity.

Everyone might be a target at some time.

The main suspicion is that for every "Targeted" search, the Police are required to search two or three others who are, erm, "outside the profile" so that "certain groups" dont feel picked on!

Hehe, well to be honest, I think my bag might have caused an issue, with all the charger wires and electronics...

It does seem like the metal detectors in the airport are 'button operated'... I.e. when the guards see someone they don't like the look of they press a button, setting the alarm off... The reason I say this is on the same trip, wearing exactly the same clothes, same glasses, no watch, no coins, I only set off one metal detector out of two... Just found it a bit odd that I didn't set both off... I know that's not true but it's a bit of a running joke anyway :P Gives me something to laugh about whilst I'm being frisked...

So, you are a young chap coming back from Northern Ireland with a load of wires inside your baggage.

Not a lot to be suspicious of there. :D

Seem to remember some time ago that an association of Police officers strongly condemned the groups championing the "outside the profile" groups, and that opposition to random searches of this group would cause problems ,as this group was most likely to be carrying something nasty .( If that makes sense) .
