Has anyone else noticed how the differential between diesel and petrol has gone down ?
Now diesel is only 3p/litre more expensive than petrol....down from over 14p/litre difference !

Never drink the stuff myself :)

Production has caught up with demand possibly?

Round by us today, petrol 98p/litre, diesel 99p/litre.

Or demand has fallen to match production!

Expect a tax hike in the near future!

All in the interest of the enviroment of course!

By my calculations, petrol is about 30ppl. Good thing our fearless leader went cap in hand to OPEC to ask them to reduce the price of oil last summer. Obviously he wouldn't move on tax, no, no, no, but then he is a prat.

At my local Texaco this morning:

Unleaded 103.9p
Diesel 99.9p

A reversal.

Prices now at a pump near me (5 miles radius)

Cheapest: Petrol = 99.9. Diesel = 99.9
Average: Petrol = 99.9. Diesel = 103.9

I heard somewhere that there was a new diesel refinery supposed to be opening round about now (can't remember where) but the intention was to increase diesel production capacity. The same source said that it was the only reason for the price differential - lack of capacity. I've no idea whether or not it's true though!

It's summer. Less demand for diesel for non-motoring uses.

Also a lot of people are realising now that diesel cars have stupid premiums that will take many years to recover out of fuel costs.

And perhaps more drivers are becoming concerned about the higher levels of PM10 pollutants emitted by diseasel engines.

Diesel for "non motoring uses" is cheaper anyway....it's red !
HMRC reckons that some 40-60% of "red" diesel is used on the road ! (59p/litre).

Quote:
Fine Particles (PM10)
Particulate matter is a mixture of organic and inorganic substances. PM10 is the name given to those particles that have a diameter of 10 micrometers (µm) or less (one-seventh the width of a human hair). These particles can penetrate deep into the lungs and can cause serious damage to those at risk. Emissions of PM10's have declined over the last two decades.

Whilst some PM10 particles come from natural sources, such as dust storms or volcanoes, most are from man-made sources. 25% are emitted by road transport and **33% by industrial, commercial and residential combustion.*** When these primary PM10 particles are emitted into the atmosphere they can react with other substances such as Sulphur dioxide and Nitrogen oxides to form secondary particulates.

District Councils measure PM10 concentrations using electronic Continuous Monitors. These machines accurately measure real-time concentrations of the pollutant. In urban areas, typical mean values are between 10-40 ug/m3.

In Cambridge City, East Cambridgeshire, Huntingdonshire and South Cambridgeshire a recent Review and Assessment report found that air quality objectives for PM10 were likely to be met by the due date (2005). It however also found that in Fenland the objectives may not be met. This is because emissions in Wisbech are still too high. An Air Quality Management Area is currently designated in this town and the District Council is working with the ***industrial operator*** to reduce PM10 emissions.

Red diesel is about 44ppl at the minute.

I have used red diesel on the road only today, in my tractor...

as for particulates, it is probably a case of a new machine has been invented to look for small particles in air. They have found some and they must surely be bad. If people were keeling over all the time I'd worry, they, but they are not, so I'm not.

Crdue oil prices are today trading over $71 a barrel, a new high for year so far. US light crude rose 1.2%, or 85 cents, to $71.05. London Brent crude rose 1.1% to $71.86 a barrel.

It is, but it all comes from the same source, so when the demand for it is higher, such as in the winter, prices increase across the board.

Of course they increase substantially more for motoring use because of the tax.

The "Euro V" emissions requirements are likly to see pretty much all new diesel cars fitted with particulate filters. I expect they'll all do a bit less mileage to the gallon though, so more CO2 instead.

Yes, but the red diesel has not been processed to remove the sulphur content....red is high sulphur.

Discussion in the motortrade suspects that "EuroV" could kill off private diesel cars altogether!

Tell me more! I only really deal with three major manufacturers on a regular basis but they all seem to think there won't be a huge problem!

Crude oil is costing for about 30p per litre ($80 a barrel). Pump prices are are about 32.5p per litre after VAT and Excise Duty. That seems to be a very small margin to cover refining, transport, reinvestment, retailer margin. Yet the oil companies are making huge profits. Is something wrong with my sums :?

Little profit derives from the sale of motor fuel.
The oil companies make the money on the sale of other products from refining, such as the petroleum base to make plastic.
