Hi,

Can somebody shed light on the minimum time it takes to receive the driving license after the practical test is successfully completed? Is there any way to speed up to receive the license faster than ususal?

Thank you,
GB

no there isn't, but you can drive as soon as you pass on your own.

No, you cannot drive while you wait. You can only drive from the time dvla receive your application until the time the licence arrives.

How long your licence will take to be returned

DVLA aim to deliver your driving licence to you within three weeks of receiving your application. It might take longer if they have to check on your health or personal details. Please allow at least three weeks for your licence to arrive before contacting DVLA.
Can you drive before your licence is returned?

Once the DVLA has received your valid application, the law allows you to drive before the licence arrives as long as:

* you have held a GB or Northern Ireland licence issued since 1 January 1976 or another exchangeable licence
* you are not disqualified from driving (there are different rules for medium or large vehicles, minibus or bus drivers - the traffic commissioner for your area will decide whether to grant your entitlement to drive these vehicles)
* you have not been, and would not be, refused a licence for medical reasons
* you keep to any special conditions which apply to the licence

I do apologise, my examiner said I could drive off that day once he'd passed me

I think this used to be true before they recorded everything on their big brother computer system. In the past, your provisional licence and your pink slip would be enough for the copper that stopped you.

.................PSSST! Listen very carefully, I shall say this only once!........License in Britain is spelt..."Licence" ..... OK? :)

Actually, I remember getting my FULL licence for a motorcycle. A few days later, I had my friend riding pillion and I was stopped for a spot check. I gave him my provisional licence and the "Pass" card......he was happy and let me go on my way.

How times have changed eh?....

This was a good question, and one which I would have asked myself if not for this thread.

Back in 1987 I gained a Private Pilot's Licence. I had lodged all my paperwork (and £100 fee) with the CAA, but was told I could not exercise the licence priveleges (carrying passengers) until receiving the licence, because it had to be signed and was not valid until signed.

Now I'm learning to ride a motor scooter, and will take the test hopefully in a few months. When I pass the test, I think I'll keep the L plates on until I get the licence back, and photo copies of my licence, in case I get stopped by the :bib: It would save a lot of awkward questions and checking...

These days, the examiner takes your provisional license from you and it is swiped in to a computer along with your pass result there & then.
This means that the minute you pass your test, you can drive while waiting for your full license to arrive.

Of course if you prefer the "old school" way, then you will have to wait until the DVLA receives your application.

Ah yes - that fits with my own experience. The CAA (campaign against aviation) certainly did everything the old school way.

I'm sure this is what happened to me, I remember being given something along with my provisional licence. This was only 2002.
