There's a commercial running on 'Dave' lately which fills me with rage - to the point I feel like writing a letter of complaint to them.

It has young boys playing football and the one lad had sex the previous night with this equally young girl.

It has two themes:

The one is where they used a condom and he's wearing a big smile. His mates know what he did and they all have a laugh about it. She's at home with her girlfriend looking dreamy and happy.

The next theme is they didn't use a condom and the lad's mates are looking down on him. The girl is worried and sad.

But what I think is an absolute disgrace is the end message which is "Want respect? Use a condom".

Excuse me! How about want respect- SAY NO!

And we wonder why our society is in the mess it is...

Of course before we did have this sort of education when young girls got pregnant (and it did happen, a lot, but people didn't speak about it) they either sought back street abortion, had the child taken off them (or were forceably incarcerated with it) or it was "adopted" into one of the families as the child of the grand mother, and the sister/brother of the father/mother.

Young people have, always have had, and always will have sex.

In fact, some of the countries with the lowest teen pregnancy rate have the highest spend on such education, with parts of the USA's "just say no" country (where there is no such education to speak of) have the highest rates.

Hec! I just found it on You Tube. See if you agree with me. Is this sending out the wrong message or what?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yKG15lAi ... re=related

Maybe I'm just old fashioned or something? Do todays generation even know the meaning of respect?

You're right of course weepej and I agree with you. What bothers me is how they have twisted the word repect. The clear message, unless I'm missing something, isn't abstinence but hey - go for it kids - it's okay!

I wouldn't mind so much if they said something like "if you have to, then put a sock on it" or something like that.

Sorry I can't think of something better.

I don't like or approve of the message that it's sending out which is - it's okay to shag (sorry to be crude)

It's strange to me that weepej seems to have a pragmatic, down-to-Earth attitude towards most things, but such a blind spot when it comes to speed cameras, disproportionate punishments and other unnecessary restrictions on the motorist. He can see that prohibitive, draconian, anti-libertarian attitudes can have opposite, unintended consequences with things like drug-taking and young people having sex - but he apparently won't even entertain the possibility with motoring.

It's another thing which, I'm afraid, makes me wonder whether there's a fundamental problem with cars governing all this and preventing logic from being applied. I'm not trying to provoke anyone, I'm just trying to make sense of it all.

Interesting topic though Big Tone, and not one that I mean to drag off-course.

Very interesting ree.t - thanks.

I'm not actually against young people 'doing it' and I was no monk myself. (Although I was a virgin until after my teens). But I do draw the line at a big TV station putting forward the message that to get respect you should wear a condom.

In other words, even if they bang like a barn door on a windy day with as many partners as they like - as long as they use condoms they are being respectful of their partner. Er, I don't think so!

Maybe I should change my user name to fuddy duddy

True.

If you have respect for you self you don’t try to have sex with everything that moves.

I don’t believe we should live our lives like monks. I think the “children will have sex, so lets make them safe” attitude does not help, and is taking the easy option.

Children (sorry young people to give them their PC term). Should be taught about condoms etc. But also taught how to have healthy sex life from the emotional perspective. I think this links into self-control, which we don’t teach young people. We as a society are feeling the effects of it. The behaviour and attitude of some young people is like that of a lower animal. Eat, drink, F£$K.

Have you considered that I might have "a pragmatic, down-to-Earth attitude" towards everything, including speed enforcement and car crash mitigation and its you that has the blind spot?

If you want to go on a race track and speed around risking life and limb I would have no problem with that, even if there were other people on the track, becuase they are participating in the knowledge of the risks, whereas the roads are a public place where my loved ones drive, walk and cycle on.

Yes again and as a result, what we have today is children having children. More importantly, how on Gods green earth is a child going to get his or her morals from a parent who is herself a child!!! :furious:

I see young mothers who sport a baby much like they do the lastest mobile phone. You can see 'the attitude' in their faces. I feel like telling them "there's more to being a parent than just giving birth you know" as they swagger down the street with a fag in their hand.

I wonder exactly how much of this respect the father actually has for her. She'll probably end up in a Y-shaped coffin.

I despond, I really do :(

Sorry, I think I went off on one there :)

Why is it not okay to shag? It's what we're designed for...

Which is why we need to be absolutely sure that we're concentrating on the correct safety factors.

Anyway you can have the last word if you want. I'm not going to continue this debate here because I really don't want to hijack the thread.

Because I'd rather make love and the commercial on Dave isn't sending that message out IMHO.

If I may put a different angle on it..

Your 16 year old daughter after watching that commercial tells you “dad, there’s a boy who’s interested in me and I like him too. We’re going to have a shag tonight but that’s okay, it’s what we’re designed for and we’re both of legal age. If we use a condom I know he will respect me in the morning.”

If I were the father of that situation I know there’s nothing I could do about it but I would advise her to ignore the stupid commercial and wait until she meets a man who shows respect before making love, not after a shag.

I think I'm turning into my mother :)

Respect. def: 'esteem for or a sense of the worth or excellence of a person'

So the fact that he may be there just to ‘give her one’ and put another notch on his bedpost doesn’t matter anymore?

I have this image in my head of a young girl thinking as long as he’s wearing a condom he respects me. Correct me if I’m wrong but isn’t that exactly what the commercial is saying? I'm sure it is. :?

That’s the new measure of a man’s respect towards a woman now is it?

It’s complete and utter nonsense!!!

I think it’s all part of modern life whereby everything has to be measured and re-defined to fit in with today’s society.

The definition of a safe speed is a numerical posted limit

The definition of respect is a condom

My ex boss was a woman, and very attractive too. If only I knew I could have respected her that way, but I think she would have slapped me in the face - and quite rightly too.

“Sorry Susan, I was just trying to show my respect for you”

How dare they bastardise that word and use it in such a crass way!

Still fuming here. :hoppingmad:

I’d like to go up to the head of Dave TV and show my :censored: respect for him!

The problem is implying:

USING a condom SHOWS respect

The other version of the advert has a more appropriate message which is:

NOT USING a condom SHOWS LACK OF respect

Last time I looked women were sentient beings and one USING that sentience would deduce that someone proposing to have sex with them (that they didn't intend to have children with and with whom contraception hadn't been discussed) was a tw@t of the first order? Also, ANYONE proposing to to have sex with someone they don't know well without a condom is, IMHO, an idiot.

If people with want to have sex that's fine with me - provided they know what they are doing.

Strikes me as a good paralell in some ways. It reminds me of all the people who wag the finger at us and tell us in that particularly self-righteous tone reserved for those that have never exceded a speed limit that it's so simple - all we have to do is lay off the accelerator! Well, it's the same with sex - all they have to do is just cross their legs isn't it!?

Of course, as Weepej rightly points out further on, driving a car happens in a public place and affects other people and if it goes wrong, could really screw up someone's life...

...whereas using a condom completely eliminates any chance of that happening with sex doesn't it?? I mean, surely there aren't any kids who are screwed up because they had sexual relationships (with or without a "johnny") that they weren't emotionally ready for, are there?

Sorry but I'm with Tone on this one. I don't mind admittiing to being "all moral" like that to the point of becoming deeply unfashionable!

..

You're confusing respect [over-25] with respect [14-25].
Not really the same.
Same word, different meaning.

Quote:
The youth haven't lost respect. People just get bitter and grumpier when they get older.

As I made mention to in another thread, the number of times I've been witness to young people holding shop doors open for the elderly only for them to barge straight past as if it was expected without a word of thanks.

It's ironic, people are so dead set against teens hanging around town centres but equally opposed to any kind of proposal to build/create a place for them to go. In truth the vast majority of teens just want to 'hang' with their mates and yes they do make the place look untidy but so do fifty blue rinsed cardigan's queueing up outside the post office to get their pensions, but we seem to tolerate them.

Also, where did this notion come from that youth crime was somehow invented in 2001? Just look at the sheer hooligans that we had walking the town centres back 30 years ago? Sure now someone might binge drink and throw up outside McDonalds but the running pitch street battles between Skinheads and some other frightful faction are long gone. Yet we are always being told how great things were back then and how much more respect those people had. You didn't. We don't. Kids aren't that different, no matter what generation they come from.

Quote:
I don't actually think it's changed that much... We were just as wild 20 odd years ago .. I was a punk and was wilder than the kids I see today .. People never change... just the rules, and we rarely abide by them anyway.. The majority of today's youth are ok kids, there will always be a percentage of unsavouries around.

The governments "respect" adverts will never work anyway, they have got the wrong end of the stick [again][as usual].
They would do better showing the guy [with no 'spect] trying to live with the gov taking 20% of his pay for the child. Or the girls [other] boyfriend beating his face in [!]

No point berating parents either, they have their work cut-out trying to pay the bills. All the while trying to stem the rising tide telling their daughters that showing 'spect for guys means opening their legs, and that their sons show 'spect by smoking, drinking, doin' dope and pokin' sluts.

Not to mention the hordes of adverts for crappy bottled spirits that make heroes out of assholes.

Picture: Get: The:

Well, to all the mothers and fathers here, would you be happy if your son or daughter at the legal age of sexual intercourse saw that clip?

I wouldn't!

I think it totally sends out the wrong message.

Maybe people think I'm old fashioned or as I once heard a comic say: -

There are two types of people in this world - there are those who are having lots of sex, and there are jealous people :D

Oh well, guess I'll bite my tongue and hurtle on into oblivion like the rest of us...

That'd be a bit presumptious that he didn't actually want to support the kid, I know some great young parents with very well adjusted children.
