I spend a lot of time on the road, averaging about 40,000 miles / year. I estimate that about 20% of this travelling time is wasted time, due to poor signposting, (& a further 20% due to lane-hogging, but that's another story!).

The quality of signposting has deteriorated to appalling levels, in many areas, in the last 8 years. Missing road/street signs, missing/incorrect/misleading directional signs, missing signposts for 'A' roads and even for major motorways, etc., ensure that the chances of taking a wrong turn in an unknown location are high. Higher, with the proliferation of one-way systems, no-left/right-turn junctions, etc.

On most roads, and in many towns and cities, there is simply nowhere to stop and check one's location on a map - particularly after having taken what was probably a wrong turn at a misleadingly-signposted junction!

Not wanting to drive with one eye on the road and another on the map, I'm thinking of coughing up for an in-car navigation system. Although it's time the government got its act together and improved signposting!

In the unlikely event of that happening, can anyone recommend a good in-car GPS-based navigation system?

The best system i have used (so MAY not be the best system), is the pioneer, with flip lcd screen, which also doubles as a DVD player, when you arrive & park on the M25 :P .

It has a touch screen, keyboard and will take both addresses & postcodes, p,codes i find extremly usefull.

It will alert you of any traffic congestion and offer an alternative route, which you can accept or decline, it even tells you the extra mileage.

I have not seen better, as yet, but tecnology is flying ahead, have a good look around, but the Pioneer is worth taking a look at.
