Just thought some might want to know who live around the South East of England.

Apparently there was an explosion at an oil refinery a couple of months ago and its now effecting supplies of diesel to garages in the South East.

A guy I work with had problems finding garages selling diesel and many had run out or may have only had one pump working. It appears petrol supplies are fine. It might be worth filling your tank a bit more than normal if you are travelling any sort of distance because not every garage might have diesel in stock.

I've noticed quite a few "not in service" covers on Diesel pumps round here, so it must be a bit more widespread (I'm a petrol user and seem ok)

Sounds like an excuse for the buggers to put the price up even more.

I'm still running on French diesel - 1.15 euro a litre.
A full fill does me for 3 - 5 weeks depending on whether we go to visit the in-laws :)
No sign of shortages here though. 8-) £1.10 a litre though

Apparently this was the refinery that caused the shortage.

BBC News

Quote:
Fire crews tackle refinery blaze

Firefighters say they have put out an oil refinery blaze sparked after an explosion which shook homes up to 14 miles away.

Crews were called to the Petroplus Coryton refinery, near Stanford le Hope, Essex, at about 1130 GMT.

Essex Fire Service said the blaze began on the ground floor of a tower and sent flames 100ft (30.5m) up the column.

The service said foam was used to bring it under control and a search of the area confirmed no one had been hurt.

Ten fire appliances and seven special units were called to the refinery which lies 30 miles (48km) from London, along the Thames Estuary.

Inspectors from the Health and Safety Executive visited the site to carry out routine checks on Tuesday - the day before the fire.

An HSE spokesman said the checks were not directly linked to the area where the fire broke out.

At the height of the blaze, a huge column of smoke could be seen from about 20 miles away.

Marion Coleman, who lives about 14 miles (22km) away on Canvey Island, told BBC Essex: "There was a massive explosion.

"Our house shook, all the windows rattled and there were flames rising to the height of the chimneys at Coryton.

"Black smoke was billowing up into the sky."

'No petrol shortages'

Ray Howard is a member of Castle Point Borough Council which covers Canvey Island, Benfleet, Thundersley and Hadleigh, and lives nearby.

"Some almighty explosion occurred, it shook my house," he said.

"The next thing, all I saw was huge flames and smoke coming from the refinery."

Essex chief fire officer Mike Hardingham said shortly after 1500 GMT that the fire was "under control and is unlikely to develop further".

"The process of bringing the incident to a conclusion is likely to take some time," he said.

"The refinery is a complex place and a number of areas are required to be shut down and managed in sequence to enable the situation to be restored to normal."

The Swiss oil company Petroplus bought the Coryton Refinery from BP in May 2007.

The site is responsible for loading about 700 tankers a day to meet 22% of the UK's forecourt demand.

Jon Barden, refinery manager, said: "The rest of the refinery is running normally and we'll work with our people to ensure normal production is resumed as soon as possible.

"There will be no shortages, we can maintain the deliveries that we plan to our customers."

The complex, which was originally commissioned in 1953, has a refining capacity of 10 million tonnes a year.

My bold, is someone telling porkies?

they are doing so! it's gone up by 1p p/l again everywhere i've seen in the last few days. this, despite the fact the price of oil is lower than it was the week they used it as an excuse to breach the £1p/l barrier

I spoke to a tanker driver at my local Tesco and asked him if there were any shortages, as far as he was concerned no, he said that there had been a blip in production but another refinery was taking up the slack, he did say that some stations order in advance to get a better price and if they underestimate they can get caught short. There was a chunk of panic buying before the tax rise.

Apparently a few have been caught out as this year it seems that more people are filling up with diesel - lots more drivers going away for christmas?

There are unprecidented queues at a HGV fuel pump next to the M271 in Southampton this morning

More to do with Christmas than short diesel I suspect.

Diesel now 107.9 at Tesco's Chelmsford.

As they like to say "Every little helps (Tesco)"

It seems like every filling station I've been to in the last few weeks in and around London has had at least half their regular unleaded and diesel pumps out of action (the super unleaded/LRP/LPG pumps are usually all open though) - it's getting increasingly frustrating pulling onto the forecourt and having to play yet another round of the "find the in-use pumps delivering the type of fuel I need" game...

@ Twister - same in SW London (Wandsworth, Fulham + New Malden Area) - far far more pump closures than can be explained away as rare occurance
