I am currently undergoing HGV (LGV ?) training and whilst studying, an interesting point occurred to me.
On a single track Road signed with a 50MPH speed limit what is the Speed limit for a vehicle over 7.5 tonnes.
Everyones knee jerk answer is 40 MPH, however this is where the National speed limit is signed. If 50mph is shown with no qualification for heavies, what is the definitive position.
If each class of vehicle was to be individually specified then the signage required would be intolerable
I contacted Scotland yard traffic dept and after they made enquiries I was told that if the road is signed 50mph then it is 50mph! Heavies included.
Can anyone point me to the definitive legislation if it is otherwise. I confess I cannot find it.

Think of it this way:
The national speed limits apply to all general purpose roads and motorway special roads, reguardless of if that road has a speed limit order set upon it its self.

A piece of road can have a speed limit order upon it as well as being subject to the national speed limits.

There are also lower limits for vehicles towing and for other 'goods vehicles' which is a legal 'class' and has nothing to do with the the handling capabilities of the vehicle.

None of this really makes sense to the point that the leader of a certain camera partnership (so I am told) once commented that if different vehicles on the same roads had different speed limits that would be a crazy situation.

I think that's the only answer to the question posted so far!

I believe the person you phoned was wrong.
your lorry is restricted to 40 on single lane roads whether marked nsl or 50.

anton is correct.

There are quite a few drivers that are not even aware of what defines a "dual carriageway" as well.

Dual Carriageway DOES NOT mean "multi-lane". It is a road whereby there is a central dividing barrier or reservation separating you from oncoming traffic.

So.....

One for the HGV 'rs..... There are single lane dual carriageways and if the speed limit is not marked below 50mph then YES you can do 50mph on it regardless of the fact it's single lane.

It's still a dual carriageway.

Motorway Speed marker boards... The ones that light up are ADVISORY not compulsory.

A compulsory sign is surrounded by a red border and should be on a white background.

/My bigheaded rant now over !!

Apart from the variable speed limit ones with white numerals on a black background, of course...
