Is there an option on the F430 for "engine bay extinguisher"?

Serves him right for speeding past one of those heat seeking missile armed instant penalty cameras!
Lucky there wasn't a hot dog van in the layby to sidetrack it!

That'll stop complaints that they dont actually STOP offenders!

Wouldn't like to speculate in this circumstance, but it is a good reminder to us all that just a small handheld extinguisher carried in the car can keep a bit of charred wiring, or smouldering hose, from becoming a burnt-out write-off.

If you can get Halon (it's manufacture is now illegal with the exception of aviation applications, but existing extinguishers can still be serviced, I believe) then its the best for knocking down engine compartment fires with the minimum of collateral damage, followed closely by CO2 and then powder. If you ever have cause to use powder under the bonnet then you would be wise to not run the engine again until a thorough cleanup has been conducted. Foam would be a distant 4th place, its generally too bulky to get an effective quantity into a small handheld extinguisher, and never, ever use water in an automotive application!

I have a halon extinguisher in my home - and it cannot be serviced by any of the local firms. It does have it's own pressure dial though, and is showing the same as it did when new. I also have a large foam extinguisher - the halon would be reserved for my computer and Hi-Fi!!

I havent heard it in a while, but I believe the old advice was NEVER lift the bonnet if you suspect a fire, without extreme caution, and adequate fire fighting materials to hand, as the waft of air as you lift is enough to turn a smouldering fire into a full blown inferno in just a second!

Absolutely! Pop the bonnet on the primary catch, but leave the secondary in place and fire the extinguisher through the gap.

I once attended a fire training session at a caravan site where I worked part time... and they set an old caravan alight by leaving a chip pan on the cooker.
Ignition was ultimately achieved by breaking a window!
In just THREE and a HALF MINUTES it was reduced to a tow hitch, attached to two girders and a set of wheels!

We were told unless there was an extinguisher within 30 feet, then just wheel as many caravans away as you could safely!!

We practiced engine bay fires on an old Austin 1100. I'd say the most you could do with a typical car sized extinguisher would be to give the occupants time to leave, or hope the fire brigade were on your doorstep! With a hot engine, re-ignition is a constant problem, especially with leaking fuel present.

yup... agreed... we went on a vehicle fires course with work.

the outcome was basically use the extinguisher if you had to to get yourself out of a vehicle or if someone was trapped inside.

otherwise get out & get out of the way.

I had a deisel escort go up in flames when I pulled over on a grass verge.
three fire extinguishers failed to put out the engine bay fire. To be honest the fire didn't flinch. I suspect it may have started from a rag left after servicing or from a hot exhaust touching long grass

On the subject of car fires, this may be just a misperception but I seem to be seeing more evidence of car fires (melted tarmac in a short space on the hard shoulder) lately. Is there a general increase in car fires?

I recall reading that there had been a rise in the numbers of engine fires since EFI became commonplace. Perhaps since these cars are now falling well out of the dealers hands there are a few more broken lines feeding fuel under some pressure in to the conflagration.

Mmm, that's my perception as well. "Car fire on the hard shoulder", or some variation, also seems to crop up more frequently in traffic reports these days too...

Halon F/X cannot be serviced and Halon systems are pretty much banned now, as for a home Halon F/X it's a grey area (it is an offence to discharge Halon/CFC gases by way from refridgeration/air conditioning systems and commercial fire systems), however, IIRC the legislation doesn't say anything about hand held F/Xs though :scratchchin:
