Had occasion to use the M25/A1(M) over the weekend.

(It works well now there are no roadworks! I wonder how long THAT will last! )

There are peculiar signs on both the clockwise and anti-clockwise carrageways

Clockwise it is
(IIRC)

A
M25
"N".3 (Half a klik later "N".8)

a Klik later (I guess) N=N+1 and so on

What are they for??

On the A1(M) there were a series of yellow trailers parked by the side of the road with what looks a bit like phased array radar panels on them. What are they for??

Are they yellow on blue with a white border?
If so they are Driver Information Signs adn the format is:

Road number
Carriageway letter
Distance in KM from notional start point

And they are placed every 500 metres (or more often).

They pretty much show the same information as the small distance marker posts, but are easier to see.

There's an interesting document here on them.

(Strangely this came up on a thread on SABRE only yesterday!)
I can't help with your radar trailer park though.

Sounds like a (insert appropriate collective term) of VMS trailers - were they something like the ones built by these guys?

Yep, Thats the one.

As for the signs on the M25, they are not the yellow distance markers one gets on all M ways. They are relativly large Blue signs with a white boarder.

A bit like the ones on the front page of that document?

Nah, everything to do with roads is metric except for signs showing distances to places and numeric restrictions. I wouldn't be surprised if height & width restriction TRO documents were specified in metric even though the 'primary' signs still show imperials.

Existing marker posts are metric. (the second line of numbers is the bit after the decimal point... Why didn't anyone tell me that?!)

These signs are primarily there so that you can tell the emergency services where you are when calling on your mobile phone. Because so many people have mobile phones now.
