Noticed some more being installed on the M1 between J14 and J13.

Loads of new cabling being installed and new items...trailer-mounted and looking like grey scoreboards.....sighting across the carriageways...

Thats what I was wondering! (See M25 Quiry)

I suppose they could be displays that are swung into view when neccecarry.

I don't think they are displays. Some could not be swung out, they are close to obstructions.

In a similar vein, I have noticed them building platforms at the side of the M40 in a couple of locations between Warwick and Oxford, and maybe elsewhere, but that is the route I travel most often.

They are about the dimensions of an ISO container, and there is a unit underneath with pipes looking like there will be some sort of service on the platforms. There is no ramp evident for allowing a vehicle onto it (can you guess what my first thought on their use was? ;))

I snapped a quick photo with my phone whilst stationary in traffic, will try to remember to upload it when I get home from work.

Anyone got any ideas?

I can answer this one

This is all part of a new Fiber network that is being implemented across the UK

If you think about it the most direct point between all the major business hubs is the motorway network, it beautifully links the whole country together.

Across the network cabling is being buried with "junctions" at major connurbations to allow these towns to be hooked on to it. The by product of the work is that there is cabling in place for the new driver information signs and the HA will make money by leasing the cables to the big network providers.

It's all part of Digital Britain

There's already a fibre comms network running the length and breadth of the country, BT installed it (before it was BT!).
As far as I know, it's not running to capacity...
No, I'm going on about further installations along motorways. They are trailer-mounted but fixed and wired-in. They look very like covered display units....but we don't really need anymore of those, and especially not at the side of the road...
