On my travels last weekend, I stayed at a Travelodge in Leicestershire. The room was comfortable and offered at a good price instead of with unnecessary frills.

One frill it did have was a copy of the Holy Bible in the bedside table unit. I realise that placement of a Bible in hotel rooms is a widespread practice to be seen in many other hotels.

I'm not a religious man myself, but I do insist on buying Christmas Cards that say Merry Christmas, and not some more generic greeting such as Season's Greetings.

So I was actually pleased to see this Bible, even though I had no intention of reading it. What with all the recent banning of wearing crucifixes, it was a welcome sight. But how much longer will it be before the PC brigade comes around, and calls for all bibles to be withdrawn from hotel rooms lest they "offend people of other faiths"? How long will it be before there are calls for these bibles to be replaced (or supplemented) by copies of the Koran?

AIUI, the Gideons exist to do things like the placing of Bibles in hotel rooms across the World. The hotel isn't putting the Bible there, they just let the Gideons do it. Provided the same hotels would allow an organisation from another religion to similarly place copies of their religious texts for the benefit of their own devotees, I cannot see any religious discrimination here.

That said, I now have an interesting mental picture of Travelodge bookshelves containing a Bible, the Koran, effigies of the Buddha, Brahma, Vishnu, and Shiva! (and a stash of ganja to keep the Rastafarians happy  )

I thought (and am happy to be proved wrong) that the gideons only put out new testaments and not bibles ?
