Do speed cameras (laser ones) work in heavy rain / snow / fog? In really heavy rain, surely the light will be affected by diffraction?

Would you really be going fast enough in those conditions to worry about it? :P

no, not really, it was of academic interest only.

Not everyone slows down for bad conditions though.

My understanding is that their range is somewhat reduced in rain and the heavier the rain the more the reduction, same in fog and snow I suppose.

Yes they should continue to work but their operating range will likely be reduced for the reason you gave.

Such conditions shouldn’t result with an invalid speed reading – even if the rain/snow/fog is at speed.

No they dont work because they actually require someone to be standing out in the rain, rather than wrapped up nice and warm in the SCP offices with coffee and doughnuts.

I guess the ones built into the back of a van may still work though.

no major changes in wet conditions, at longer ranges i am not to sure but 100m - 500m no problem, with the recent wind i had a bit of trouble with the wind blowing the laser off track so a load of E03 readings

There's a (Para) site on the m4 in South Wales near J35 an area I pass frequently both on the motorway and the bridge he lurks on. In the 3-4 years I've being doing so I have never seen him there when there has been more than a slight drizzle, and when I have half the time he looks like he's packing up.

Maybe it's the fact that the apex of the wide sweeping bend he point his machine at is about 5-600m away and as so his range is sufficiently decreased that people are aware of the hazard and brake before he can ping them?

New defence -"M'Lud - i put it to the court that the laser ray was deflected by the wind and targeted a vehicle in the other lane"( A respected member of the camera operating fratnertity says so )

(Defendant walks out of court , wallet lighter by some pounds, and licence heavier by 3 points, accompianed by a chorus of laughter by the SCP)
