so, some time in the furture, nobody uses private cars, we're all on public transport, speed cameras arn't our problem anymore, the earth has stopped warming and every thing is great. Except 2 things. Bob Crowe and Bobby Law. I think that's the two, you know the two cockernies that wish it was 1970.

If we're all (or more of us are) on public transport these two characters, could and probably would hold the country, or at least the commuting public, to ransom. Were I having to rely on public transport I'd need to see some pretty solid assurance that unions weren't going to stop working each time the coffee machine ran out of sugar.

The driver of my car doesn't go on strike very often and when he does I don't want to go out anyway...

Your attitude to unions seems a bit rooted in 1970 too.

last time I heard of a strike threat by the RMT, it was over poor safety standards prevailing at Network Fail and the Train Operators.

So this strike didn't happen then?

BBC News wrote:
Thousands affected by bus strike

Bus passengers faced severe disruption to their journey home as drivers took part in a 24-hour strike over pay.
Some 60 bus routes serving north, central and west London and parts of Hertfordshire have been affected.

The Transport and General Workers' Union wants a 6% wage increase in line with similar pay offers from other London bus operators.

Metroline has offered a 4% pay rise and said it believed this was "still the best deal in London".

The strike, which ends at 0400 GMT on Wednesday, has affected routes out of King's Cross, Wembley, Holloway, Perivale, Edgware, Willesden and Cricklewood.

Main routes hit included the 134, 139, 24, 263, 82 and 113 as well as many night bus routes to North London out of Trafalgar Square.

'Last resort'

Jack Dromey, of the Transport and General Workers' Union, said the industrial action was a last resort after negotiations stalled.

Drivers want an increase to their basic salary from £10.43 an hour to £11.

"If other bus operators can find up to 6% why can't Metroline?" said Mr Dromey.

A Metroline statement said the pay offer was "fair and reasonable in the context of recent improvements to pay and our current financial performance".

"The company remains committed to resolving this dispute," it said.

Further strikes will be held on 20 and 27 November unless the deadlock is broken.

Now my (ex) company was averaging a 1% pay rise across UK employees for the 4th year running, combined with increased contributions and slashed Final Salary benefits for existing members.

To me a 4% pay rise seems to be a very good offer indeed.

And the refusal of Network rail over pension rights- which would have led to a two tier pension scheme, when it took maintenance back in house.

Well I haven't had a pay rise since 1999, so I am with you on that one!

Regards

Roger
