If you want to keep shoppers out of the town centre[1] but allow residents to park then I don't see why they can't give residents a number of permits, enough for their own cars and also a couple to shove in their guests cars if someone is staying for a few days.

They do this in Poole!
Well actually they want to stop "commuters" from parking. They give you permits... No, give, I mean sell. £30 per year. Plus £5 each time you change VRM. And they give you daily permits for your friends. Did I say give again? Give in exchange for money. And you can only have something like 20 of these per year unless you grovell.

And they didn't even draw the lines right.

The most sensible system I've seen is in Finchley.

There's a residents parking scheme, and if you don't have the badge you can't park between 2PM and 3PM.

That's right, one hour in the afternoon. Just enough to make the roads unusable for commuters but still allowing people to park there and use the local shops most of the time.

The choice of time would personally annoy us though, 2PM is about the earliest my GF gets to leave for lunch on most days.

Trying it in my town as well - the rate of "giving " was going to be £15 till the residents in that area revolted and the council went to "review" the situation ( in april ,with elections in may???)Trouble was that there were more cars than spaces.

I neither recommend nor condem such 'discrimination'. I don't expect it to make a significant difference. But hearing that it's happening gives me a nice warm feeling - that's about the full extent of it as far as I'm concerned.

Thats fair enough. I agree 100% that current parking regulation are barmy and grossly unfair in many cases but that will not change until target driven enforcement is abolished.

At the end of the day the guy barring the wardens from his pubs is only going to hurt his own profits. He is just cutting his nose off to spite his face. Its not going to achieve anything, they will just go and drink somewhere else.

Alternatively he may be attracting additional customers that agree with his point of view..:drink:
Or he may be avoiding having fights on his premises when certain more rowdy elements of the clientele decide to take a personal type of revenge... :stop:
