Aah, that may be a joke,

But this one is true...

While taxiing out in sequence behind a Lufthansa airliner at Frankfurt, a USAF C-130 crew noticed an orange "Remove before flight" streamer hanging out of the Lufthansa nose wheel well (their nose gear locking pin was still installed). Not wanting to cause too much embarrassment by going thru the controller, the 130 crew simply called the Lufthansa aircraft on the tower frequency: "Lufthansa aircraft, Herky 23." No reply.

They repeated the transmission and again there was no reply. Instead, the Lufthansa pilot called the tower and asked the tower to tell the Herky crew that "the professional pilots of Lufthansa do not engage in unprofessional conversations over the radio."

The 130 pilot quickly replied, "Frankfurt tower, can you please relay to the professional pilots of the Lufthansa aircraft that their nose gear pin is still installed?"

it's the drivers

yeah, whatever you say. Funny how I never encounter a high number of these drivers, but them I'm not English... from where I'm sitting poor driving in this country, or any other I've driven in, isn't confined to, or over represented by, any one make or model of car.

Its fair to say that most Beemers tend to win most group tests in the motoring press. I suspect they are excellent cars. Its also fair to say that any crap driver can drive any car.

I tend to see two types of beemer driver, the ones who buy into the engineering and the ones that buy into the image.

But...Its the marketing of the Beemer, particularly the 3 series which has consistently placed it as something to aspire to, with buyers confusing 'arguably the best' with 'definitely the most desirable'. For a big sector of its buyers, it became a designer label for those who wanted the most obviously visible elevation of status that they could afford. So despite the poor old 3 series' qualities, it was often bought and driven by people who were confident that they 'had arrived' by being the pushiest salesman or blagging the most credit. Their belief in the brand mirrored their own belief that they must be seen in the best. For many, the driving habits then followed the self obsession. I'm no sociologist but I think this is probably uniquely British & social climbing/class system based.

As Jeremy Clarkson noted a while back, 3 series sales are outpacing Mondeo sales. They are piles cars, (sooner or later every a***hole's got one). Also the understated alternatives have got much cooler (A4, Alfa 156, Saab 9-3 & Lexus (pre-Partridge!)) and are being bought by middle management, so the effect will no doubt peter out soon.

Can you tell I want to be a motoring journalist? Can you tell that's pretty unlikely?

you could say beemers were a victim of their own success, because every aspiring "upwardly mobile" type that wasn't sucessfull enough to afford a porsche in the 80's the BMW was the car to have, and despite being in a different era old perceptions don't change easily.

It is quite accurate to say that a lot of BMW drivers are crap (a lot, but not all).
The same applies to 4x4 drivers, white van drivers, and motorcyclists (regardless of make of vehicle).

But it hasn't got a label saying "do not use", has it

Perhaps we should print some off and put on their windscreens. Would they still not take the Hint? :D :D

slightly off topic, but I always have a chuckle when I see pathetic muppets in beemers who stick 'M3' badges on their bootlids, often with too few exhausts, and too many doors, to be a convincing copy.

If I could be bothered to give them any more than the fleeting attention they get when occupying the same road as I am on, I would love to put stickers on the windscreen saying something like "someone's pinched all the M3 bits except the badge".

Bit old ,but--

How can a ship full of luxury cars (the Tricolour) crash in the channel? Easy, the captain thought "I'm driving 3000 BMWs - "I OWN the B***** channel".

Dear Derick,
I detest people who don't indicate. It's lazy, sloppy, selfish and dangerous. I completely disagree with the IAM's "don't bother indicating if there's nothing in sight" policy, which I consider to be weak, illogical and definitely not a contribution to road safety. I always view, then signal, then position. I move to lane 1 on motorways when not overtaking and let people out of junctions. I help little old ladies across the street, even if they don't want to cross.
It would be very easy for me to pick on, say, "people carrier", Mondeo or Vectra drivers and say they don't indicate, because many don't, but some do. I could also to pick on 4x4 and hatchback drivers with their front fog lights on all the time, but again, they don't all do that, just a few.
I drive a 7 series BMW, have no points on my licence and no accidents. Please don't make the mistake lump everyone who drives a particular brand of car together into the same category, it's insulting and inaccurate.

I'm not quite sure why you would indicate, if there was clearly no-one around to take note of or be informed by your signals.
Are you saying you do it automatically? If so, you probably aren't focussing all your attention on your driving.
Or are you doing it to "keep in the habit"? Almost as bad as above. Or is it a "just in case" scenario, in which case do you put a mac on even when it's sunny "just in case it rains"?.
If there is no-one around, why signal?
If you're not sure whether there's anyone around- you need to brush up on your observation and hazard perception skills.

And then again - why are we seeing a host of signs on the rear of HGV "if you cannot see my mirrors, etc"
In the ideal world no one would get in the blind spot to the rear of larger vehicles. In todays world it happens regularly, sometimes moving about a lane fails to reveal the idiot i know is sitting a few inches off my rear bumper.

I am sure. Sorry to be combative, but you're clearly not getting this at all. I do all the observation humanly possible - what about the guy who was in a driveway behind a tree and popped out 0.1 second after your head turned? How on earth can you or the IAM possibly say that any driver has seen everything possible, unless you've got fly-eyes perhaps? And maybe one eyeball up your backside too? It's utter nonsense to suggest that actually bothering to indicate means I'm incapable of excellent observation and am therefore unsafe. Choosing to indicate ALWAYS regardless of there apparently being nobody to see it cannot in any way be dangerous. On the other hand, choosing not to indicate can potentially be hazardous. You're actually defending the non-indicating drivers!!!!!!! Say that again after one of them's wiped you out with an unexpected right turn, go on, I dare you. It's even more daft to say that I'm doing it out of pure habit, especially since you don't know me and have not driven with me. Sorry to be crude but the "don't bother to indicate" mentality is load of complete utter illogical indefensible lazy stupid inaccurate bollocks. Just do the right thing all the time and don't make useless pointless exceptions when "there's nobody around." What are you saving exactly? Light bulbs maybe? Sounds like "Sorry mate, I didn't see you" thinking. And with 22 years of full bike licence behind me too I feel more than able to say that to a fellow biker. We're on the same side - let's keep it that way - the fight's out there, not here!

I think we can credit the IAM with giving the whole concept quite a lot of thought over the years that it has been in existence since adopting, as it did, police driving standards as its basis. A lot more thought certainly than this diatribe ....

A side effect of this site is that it enables drivers to discuss concepts and practices that may appear 'odd' if only thought about from one angle. It is quite clear that we are not all on the same side with respect to the indicating issue.

Dear Derick, please clear this up for me. In your OP you had a go at all BMW drivers for not indicating. When I tell you I'm a BMW driver who always indicates, you have a go at me.
Maybe if I got a different car you'd be happy?

Many apologies Derick, it was your OP, but the last post wasn't yours.

Dear Rigpig, given Derick's OP which was that no BMW driver ever indicates, should I indicate or not? Or just on Tuesdays?

If a tree falls over in a forest but nobody hears it, does it make a sound?
