Thalidomide - a medial / scientific blunder

Thalidomide is not necessarily a blunder. There are two isomers of the active chemical and only one causes the severe birth defects, the other is safe. It was a manufacturing problem and insufficient testing that allowed the wrong form into the drugs taken by people.

Thalidomide is still used today in the treatment of leprosy.

Endowment mortgages weren't a bad idea per se, they were just a bad gamble based on overoptimistic returns.

Most endowment policies, while possibly shortfalling the amount of initial capital they were intended to repay, will still give a healthy return on the amount of money invested in them.

Ja .. it got a licence for this in USA in 1998 -ish.

It also being researched for its other uses - cancer treatments.

Main side effect .. can severely affect nervous system und as we know the developing foetus.

But there ist no such thing as a "safe" drug. They will all have side effect und react with some idiosyncrasies more in some than in others.

But ist still a good analogy to speed cams as in

 Medicine not appropriate to alleviate or cure the problem of morning sickness und it create more tragedy as result of being incorrect medicine und prescribed without fullest research as to outcome

ist to

 Speed camera does not prevent people from using speed inappropriate to road condition und does not alleviate or cure the problem und it create more tragedy in lost licences for the trivial lapse as opposed to removing licence from truly dangerous und thoughtless und was prescribed without fullest research as to outcome

Und back to topic.. I think "Nuclear Free Zone" und Kengestion Charge might figure.

Anything ending in addiction must have seemed like a good idea at some point. Then reality bites and it's hard to stop...

How about "mild" cigarettes.

If you smoke these, you end up puffing harder and get even more tar and crap in your lungs than if you had just stuck to the "strong" ones, all while beleiving you are being more healthy.

That's sort of similar to the speed camera argument, right? "Hey, they're mild, all other factors are irrelevent, I am safer than you"
