Paul,

The wife and I had three days off last week, and we booked ourselves in to a hotel in Nairn

http:/www.swallowhotels.com/hotels/golf-view-hotel

Obviously, we drove up there: M6 / M74 / A9.

Well.

The A9.

What a road :D :D

Wide open stretches that allow 2 - 3 car passes, sensational scenery, and - the best thing - sensible road signage..............!!!!!!

"Please use lay-by to clear queues"

"Frustration causes accidents - please allow overtakes"

"Dual carriageway in 2 miles"

It seems that Scots road planners have a "common sense" chip implanted at birth as opposed to the tree-hugging, hand-wringing, sandal-wearing damp patches that seem to constitiute road planners in the rest of the country!

Favourite road of the holiday? Don't know the road number, but travel along the north side of Loch Ness, then turn right at Invermoriston. After about 10 miles, turn left towards Glengarry and - shortly after a left hander - witness the view towards Glen Coe and Ben Nevis.

Deep Joy............

Great road...

Once you get past Perthshire and the cameras.

I assume you went up on a weekday, it can be a 90mile queue on a Saturday in the summer.

Actually, yeah.

Midweek.

But the A9 still seems "obliging" to multiple "wind-surfing" overtakes where safe to do so.

thanks to Safety1st on the Advanced Driving site for the "wind-surfing" term

me - winds clock back 40 years , thinks of nastier road , thinks of no cams , fewer cops and remembers paridise --- scenery - taken as granted -only problem vans were caravans - and "scenic gourmets"

"Wind-Surfing"

An overtaking technique whereby one positions the car directly over the white line (on NSL roads) so that the offside and nearside wheels are either side of the central white line (or, indeed, further). This is done frequently when attempting an overtake for two reasons:

1. To indicate to the "overtakee" that you are looking to pass

2. To afford maximum forward vision for performing the overtake

I'm being simplistic about this, but there is a FAR better description on advanced-driving.co.uk about this from "Safety1st" (police class 1 pursuit driver and advanced driving instructor).

YEP - but if overtakee decides not to comply - and blocks your overtake - fresh pair of trousers -- please .
Better to sit back a little - look for the gap , accelerate into the gap and overtakee is lost trying to acelererate in no time flat -

Hi Simon

Nairn's a great place, great beaches and great walks right up the river Nairn. Did you go to the little chippy in the Fishertown (Friar Tucks)?

Is that hotel not near the links putting green and tea room?

I think you might be talking about the A82 (part of it anyway). If you ever go back up that way, take the M8 westbound past Glasgow, cross Erskine Bridge (over river Clyde) and head for Crainlarich/Fort William/Inverness (A82). It is a good bit more windy and you can get stuck behind buses and lorries but the scenery is definetly worth it-million times better than A9 Scenery.

Regards

Andrew
