Hey good luck! It will be the experience of a life time and treasured memories whatever the outcome and I hope it pans out well careerwise. But be sure to invite your parents to stay! We like cheap hols in the sun!

Oh and play Rolf Harris's version of "Stairway to Heaven!" Truly surreal and even Robert Plant acknowledged it as his "favourite cover of their classic"

Umm.. I have one Rolf Harris collection in my collection! :bunker:

Have fun.. but remember

If you want to go best

then

you gotta go WEST (Perth)

incidentaly did I mention I come from (near) Perth !!

:-)

@ the OP

Your getting old mate !!

Naaah. I'll listen to anything as long as it's not crap, just depends on the mood I'm in. As for albums that are listenable all the way through Try some John Cougar Mellencamp albums.
Here's One and... Here's another <- Bit more rocky

Coming in late to this thread, but I think using Radio 1 in the daytime to sample "modern music" is doomed to failure as your sample is very narrow and limited to just a few genres. Daytime Radio 1 is just commercial radio without adverts these days. Try listening to Zane Lowe's show in the evenings for a better selection. That guy is probably the closest we're going to get to a replacement for John Peel.

My theory regarding music is that mainstream music is becoming increasingly productised and run as a business and thus the execs play safe, and that's exactly what the product is now, safe and inoffensive so that anyone can listen to it. Unfortunately with the growth of the internet and having pretty much all music from the last 50 or so years available instantly via means of various degrees of legality means that a lot of the more savvy teenagers are ignoring what the record companies say they should be listening to and listening to whatever they like. This IMO is the real reason why record companies are blaming piracy for poor sales. Their product is crap and piracy means that the more savvy kids quickly realise that their product is crap. You remove the piracy and the kids wont know any better.

My younger brother (18) listens to a lot of the bands my dad liked as a teenager. He identifies as a mosher and listens to a lot of the nu metal stuff and I have to confess to quite liking some of them (less keen on the more screamo type stuff though, except for Cradle of Filth), but at the same time he likes a lot of the old rave stuff that I grew up with. None of us can be bothered with the likes of Beyonce or James Blunt or whoever is on TOTP right now.

Of course what happens is we have all this non-mainstream stuff and occasionally one genre will get so popular that the mainstream producers will take it and run with it, and usually ruin it in the process. This happened to Trance, it's currently happening to Happy Hardcore, which I find particularly distasteful as this is the stuff I grew up listening to and now the genre is filled with shitty covers of once great songs and people think the cover is actually the original. In going mainstream the music loses it's edge and whatever it was that made it special in it's efforts to gain broader appeal. Just compare HipHop to R&B for example.
