Anyone know why I can't get onto the forums from my "home" computer but I can from my "work" one?

The home computer just sits there for ages saying "waiting for http:www//safespeed.org.uk/forums....etc but doesn't ever connect. Other websites (like PH) are fine. The "work" computer shares the same router but connects to the internet via a VPN at work....

Could be a DNS problem, can you ping safespeed?

ping www.safespeed.org.uk

Pinging safespeed.org.uk [66.29.138.186] with 32 bytes of data:

Reply from 66.29.138.186: bytes=32 time=213ms TTL=48
Reply from 66.29.138.186: bytes=32 time=192ms TTL=48
Reply from 66.29.138.186: bytes=32 time=187ms TTL=48
Reply from 66.29.138.186: bytes=32 time=190ms TTL=48

Ping statistics for 66.29.138.186:
Packets: Sent = 4, Received = 4, Lost = 0 (0% loss),
Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds:
Minimum = 187ms, Maximum = 213ms, Average = 195ms

If it does not find the ip address try the ip address - ping 66.29.138.186

If you get a reply then it is the site name failing to be resolved by DNS.

If it finds the ip address but you get no reply try - tracert 66.29.138.186

Tracing route to nwvps.co.uk [66.29.138.18]
over a maximum of 30 hops:

1 3 ms 1 ms 1 ms 192.168.xxx.xxx
2 8 ms 26 ms 7 ms 10.29.120.1

8.76.153.222]
11 217 ms 190 ms 196 ms nwvps.co.uk [66.29.138.18]

Trace complete.

You should get a list something like the above, i.e. ending with the safespeed ip, if you get asterisks in there you have a routing problem.

Just in case you do not know-

Use the Start button
then select run
type cmd into the text field then enter

that will get you to the command prompt to enter the ping & tracert commands

Edit - expanded it a bit after getting the initial post in

Much obliged!

Tried it and got a series of results pretty much like yours (average time 221ms).

All looked like a valid and complete IP address.

I can get the Safespeed homepage up, it's just the board index I can't get. I tried pinging www.safespeed.org.uk/forum/index.php and it didn't like that. It said "ping request could not find host". Does that mean there's a problem, or doesn't it work when you put slashes in?

Does not work with the slashes :)

If you can get the main site normally the forum should be accessible, it uses the same ip address. What browser are you using? If you have Firefox for example have you tried IE? If you do not use Firefox it might be worth installing it - http://www.mozilla-europe.org/en/firefox/ to check.

You could try http://66.29.138.186/forum/index.php instead of www.safespeed.org.uk/forum/index.php in your browser. If it works it may indicate that you have managed to block the forum url in the browser security settings by accident.

You can only ping an IP address, www.safespeed.org.uk resolves to an IP address which is why it works.

Don't think you can't ping a specific file, index.php is a file.

Can I suggest trying to look at an image in a forum page and see if that comes up ... for instance styles/prosilver/imageset/site_logo.gif

If that comes up you have access to the forum ... still won't solve the prob but will confirm access.

Is your work blocking access somehow? My work blocks lots of stuff ... forums, blogs, mail etc. :x

Assuming you're using xp:
START
RUN
type: CMD
enter
type: ipconfig /flushdns
enter
close windows
See if it works then

Yet.....

Lo and behold !!

Ok OK!! Everyone who told me IE was cr4p can now say a big "I told you so!!!!". Yes, guilty as charged. Will try to get round to installing Firefox.

Will also try the other suggestions.

Re. work computer, not, it's the other way round! I'm using my work computer now, it's the home computer that can't access the forums!!!

One thing I ought to mention is that I've just changed ISP. I went from orange to BT (and I'm begining to regret it)! This happened when I first got online with BT - it just hated the Safespeed site. After a few days it sorted itself out but now it seems to hate it again! Sometimes it hates my VPN connection to work too! (and increasingly, I find that I hate BT)!!! Oh well, only another 17 months, 1 week and 3 days of my contract left to go!

This windows user is quite happy to use the command line interface....I used to use it with dos, and I've continued to use it with windows...I also used it to install and debug (get working) my sons linux notebook when he wanted a gsm broadband adaptor installed.

Kudos to you.

Sometimes it's just easier isn't it ? I guess it's the same as I always type tags manually because it's what I've always done.

[Edit]
Forgot to say to Mole

Mole, I'm on BT (always have been) and rarely have a problem accessing safespeed. As we ALL have recommended to you...... Install Firefox

:D

Yep, FF is better than IE.....your problems may well stem from that old IE trick of allowing anyone to dump anything onto your system.

Mole,

You're not alone.

I've been accessing the site all day through my netbook via a BT line, but for the last hour I've not been able to access the site (through the BT line), yet access is as normal though another landline on my main PC.

There must be a problem with BT

The interruptions are due to BT fitting all the monitoring devices for the Government. :D

Not this one, if you cannot use a CLI you should not be in IT support. Besides, when I first started using computers there wasn't much choice as the first GUI had not yet been released.

Mole, have you got the content advisor enabled in IE by any chance?

Tools Menu
Internet options
Content tab

Content Advisors is at the top and if it is off the button should read - Enable and the Settings button should be greyed out.

Normally it would warn you using a popup, but it is IE...

On the same subject does BT offer a default content filter as part of the package, it may be blocking safespeed for some reason.

You could also try using an external proxy site, look at http://www.tech-faq.com/proxy.shtml for some info on that, this should bypass a BT content filter.

Bingo!

Thanks for that. No, I didn't have content advisor enabled but it works fine through one of those "proxy server" jobbies!

Well I never! Safespeed on a list of banned sites!!!! I expect I'll have the Stazi knocking on the door shortly! Bleedin' marvelous isn't it? I can stumble across all manner of dodgy sites and it doesn't bat an eyelid (well, not THAT many dodgy sites, you understand...!) and BT in their infinite wisdom decide that Safespeeeders are right up there with paedophiles, terrorists and hackers!

OK, How do I go about getting it changed? I guess I could continue to use a proxy-site but the one I picked had banners across the top advertising certain "other sites" that I'm not sure I'd want the kids seeing! (And explaining it to Mrs Mole might not be that easy)!
