Clarkson published details of his Barclays account in the Sun newspaper, including his account number and sort code. He even told people how to find out his address.

"All you'll be able to do with them is put money into my account. Not take it out. Honestly, I've never known such a palaver about nothing," he told readers.

But he was proved wrong, as the 47-year-old wrote in his Sunday Times column.

"I opened my bank statement this morning to find out that someone has set up a direct debit which automatically takes £500 from my account," he said.

"The bank cannot find out who did this because of the Data Protection Act and they cannot stop it from happening again.

"I was wrong and I have been punished for my mistake."

Proves one thing though- Clarkson's no politician. He apologised and sounded like he meant it!

Thinking of the current Clarkson for PM stories, at least he'd knowingly give our information away and not just lose it.

Well, you do have to respect the guy, he was at least willing to put his money where his mouth is (even if he was wrong) and when proven wrong openly admitted it and apologised, which is rare these days.

And he hasn't really lost the money. The guy openly admits to eating huge amounts of meat and taking no exercise so I'm sure he'll get it back from Diabetes UK indirectly in the next 10 or 20 years. Whoever set up that direct debit is not without a sense of irony.

At least he was able to counter his somewhat arrogant assertion that it was all a palaver over nothing, with some well placed humility.
If only more prominent people could learn from that.
