I know that there are gps units that will tell your speed and even warn if exceeded at a speed camera.
But are there any units that will notify you if the speed limit is exceeded wherever I am driving?

I would like to be able to concentrate on my driving and not on the speedometer. Would even pay to be speed limited when driving.

When I spent 3 weeks on a fly drive holiday in the USA I bought software for my handheld PDA with gps correctly gave an audible warning every time I exceeded the local speed limits. That was great as in an unfamiliar car and country I needed to concentrate on driving (wrong side of road).

Hope someone has a good solution / idea.

Thanks

Craig

Yes there are, but I wouldn't bet my license on them.

Last December I was on a road in London (A312 I think) which was marked as having a 40 limit, I think it was reduced from 50. The TomTom 510 (gives plenty of warnings) stated the road was 50. It also correctly warned of a fixed camera on the road :o

The government don't even have a database of all the speed limits in this country do they? And they keep changing. And then there's the non-road-traffic-act ones.
Until the government have a database and promise to keep it up to date (and we all know how good government IT projects are) I wouldn't want to trust it.

With the proviso's outlined above, yes there are.

I know the Miomap GPS units do for certain, I imagine others do also.

But if you drive to the prevailing conditions you'll find the speed limit warning extremely annoying.

I have my TomTom configured to flash "current speed" in red at limit+10%

BUT it doesn't always have the limit right! Still useful though

Prof Beard,
On the TomTom GPS unit, will it tell you if you go over speed whatever the posted speed limit is. i.e., 30mph in towns and 40/50/60/70 on other roads?

On my old Navman gps I have I can only set a limit which won't reflect the actual speed limit of the area I am driving through.

I wouldn't mind if temporary speed limits weren't covered as I would normally be more alert driving through roadworks, etc. but it would be an advantage.

Any thoughts on over-speed monitoring by GPS units? I've trawled the web and this is a feature which is not well advertised.

Thanks.

Craig

The tomtom unit will tell you the speed you are travelling at and if the speed limit is known it will be included. IE: 26/30.....27/30....and the colours change to red if over the known limit. The map can be ordered to blank at a set speed to avoid diverting your attention from the road, although the speed/time/remaining-time etc stay displayed, and the vocal directions carry-on.
The POI warnings are still sounded as well....good for speedcams.

Between 0.5 to 1 mph out at 70mph, at the worst. Unless you're going up a hill with a slope greater than 1:1.

I decided to purchase the Tom Tom 720 and will try it soon on a trip to Birmingham. That should give it a good workout

Thanks for the help.
