Yes. There was a petition running at the same time asking TB to keep the proposed tracking system.

I think it got about 3000 signatures.

:!: So many ugh!.....I'm surprised he has that many friends!

Speaking with my brother late last weekend, and he came up with an interesting idea.
Fit all cars with a money meter. A meter that shows you how much a journey costs you in £ and p.
So a quick trip down to the shops will cost you just in fuel alone to get a loaf of bread, when you could just as easily have walked.
How much does that school run actually cost?

I think people would be very surprised, and price themselves off the roads for short journeys.
Like the muppet who crawled onto the motorway this week, drove at about 40mph and went off at the next junction. Didn't think to look at the traffic already on the motorway and the immediate tailback that he caused in already fairly heavy traffic.

Something that might appeal to blokes like you - fit motorways with "money meters"to see how much a limited truck costs the country.

I think that is a good Idea. Think of the conjestion caused when one limited truck tries to over take another limited truck. So both L1 and L2 are slowed and in L3 some person is doing 60.
Yes people like us :?: think that is a great idea.

since starting to commute up to stoke a bit more regularly i have noticed that the HATO prats will stick to 50ish even when they are causing elephant races, what is the logic of driving below the average speed for the inside lane of the motorway?

Ah, well. Don't the police do that also?

This may well be folklore, but I was told that the police are instructed to drive at the most efficient speed possible (56mph?) untill a "shout" comes in.
I personally think they just do it to annoy.

i cant see how they can do road pricing without retaining tax (of some sort on fuel)..... if people are taxed on the distance they drive rather than the fuel they consume a lot of people are going to shift over to large engined cars.

The entire point of the new generation of small diesels is that they do 70mpg (allegedly) if fuel costs 5p a litre you might as well have an XJS

i reckon they will put a limited scheme in on motorways initially (very few access and exit points) and it will be on top of all exisiting taxation....probably also be quite cheap for the first couple of years then just steadily increase

I suspect the charge would also be based on the car as well as the road so low mpg cars would be charged more.

Playing Devil's advocate for a moment - If the above were used then fuel duty and road tax could be removed entirely with everything charged on usage. You could then have a high mpg car for the commute and a low mpg car for distances.

Of course you need to be able to afford to run two cars...
