Street Lamp Camera Plan
Updated: 13:44, Monday January 29, 2007

X-ray cameras could be installed on lampposts on British streets to spot armed terrorists and other criminals, it has been claimed.

According to a leaked memo seen by The Sun, "detection of weapons and explosives will become easier" if the scheme drawn up by Home Office officials is adopted.

However, officials acknowledged it would be highly controversial as the cameras can "see" through clothing.

"The social acceptability of routine intrusive detection measures and the operational response required in the event of an alarm are likely to be limiting factors," the memo warned.

"Privacy is an issue because the machines see through clothing."

The Sun said the memo, dated January 17, was drawn up by the Home Office for the Prime Minister's working group on security crime and justice.

Seeing through clothing It noted some technologies used for airport security had already been used in police operations searching for drugs and weapons in nightclubs.

"These and other could be developed for a much more widespread use in public places," it said.

"Street furniture could routinely house detection systems that would indicate the likely presence of a gun, for example."

A Home Office spokeswoman said: "We don't comment on leaked documents".

So, I'll be walking aound the streets with surrepticiously placed aluminium foil ?

Funny about the airport machines....women are scanned by women operatives. But men are scanned by women and men !

It just means that the clothing manufacturers will make clothes that block the radiation.

More to the point... These things are using x-rays, so how long before you accumulate a big enough dose of radiation actually to be harmful?

And when questioned about this by the home office they will say that it Is "to protect the wearers from mobile phone radiation"

I suspect that the mention of x-rays is just sloppy journalism (or possibly a not-so-sloppy attempt at scaremongering - x-rays coming at us from every lamppost, nooooooooooo!!!), because this proposed system sounds suspiciously similar to the millimetre-wave cameras that Qinetiq announced to the public a few years ago...

Qinetiq wrote:
In contrast to active detection systems incorporating low-level radiation emissions (e.g. x-ray scanners), QinetiQ's millimetre wave camera is a passive detection system, and therefore does not expose individuals to a radiation source.

I had the chance to play with QinetiQs MMW camera system last time i was at Malvern - very, very impressive.
The leader of the team said that the biggest problem they had was designing a computer programme that generated a "fig leaf" to protect peoples modesty!
I'm all for it at airports etc. (imagine being able to simply walk stright through to departures without the stupid searches) but surely lamp-posts is a bit too far?

Sub-millimetre wave cameras with a spectrographic analyser can whip the clothes right off you as your clothes radiate at a longer wavelength to your body as your body has heated them.
At first thoughts monitoring these cameras would seem a pretty peachy job, but on seeing some of the munters that wander round Colchester, not bloody likely! :o

Levity.
As I wander around the net I frequently come across sites that offer a variety of "images".
Pictures from commercial cctv.....etc.
Now, while I consider that security is nice, it comes at a price.
There seems little reason to scan everyone down to skin level to stop a few mad bombers....especially since they'll probably have their bombs wrapped in book or shoes. But it'll make a nice little sideline for the badly paid security staff...selling dvds' of everyone with no kit on. Your friendly neighbourhood supermart probably has staff selling "changing room" pictures even as I type.....and as I said a while ago.....the women get scanned by women, the guys get scanned by women too...sex equality !
