I've finally given in and decided to try adverts on the web site.

There's an example tacked onto the bottom of the front page http://www.safespeed.org.uk/index.html right now while I'm testing.

I'm going to have a go with adverts in the forums, and I've been eyeing up the white space around the page headers. It's not easy for me to get it working properly for various reasons, so if you see a load of rubbish at the top of the page for a while, that'll be me messing with it.

I shall monitor carefully and if pages loads slow down very much or if it generates next-to-no cash then I'll soon quit.

Anyone want to make comments about advertising on web sites? I hate it myself, but then I'm not very fond of being unable to pay for stuff either.

Anyone want to click on the links on the front page and verify they work? I'm banned from clicking them myself with dire warnings if caught out. We'll get paid per click, so obviously there would be something rather incestuous or even masturbatory if we went clicking.

I clicked on both links. The one for moneysupermarket thingummy didn't work but the one on the right for the mechanics course did.

Most sites have adverts these days but if you keep them to reasonably relevant and unobtrusive (no pop ups /pop unders) then it should be ok and not put people off. A lot of people have pop up blockers so pop ups are largely worthless.

Google ads seems to be ok. Any advertising by doubleclick would be a bad idea as I have found they can make some sites unusable as they stop a page loading (I don't know whether you could put in some javascript that carries on loading the page or drops the ad if it doesn't appear within a certain time....) which is incredibly annoying.

Amazon have an associates scheme which might be worth looking at.

:? Can't see the ads at all. I thought it was the ad blocking in the firewall, but having turned it off there's still nothing there.

I'm getting in a right pickle trying to get the (poxy) ads to work in the forums.

My problem is I don't have a tool that will allow me to edit the PHPBB .tpl files in an understandable way. It'd be fine if I handwrote html, but that's not something I ever learned, and it's not really the time to start.

Are there any HTML whizzes here who can help me out? It should be 20 minutes work for someone with the right skills. Me? I've just wasted 3 hours and the results are getting worse... :(

Paul

No problem with ads, you deserve the new revenue stream.

Hi Paul

I wouldn't call myself a whizz, but I may be able to help (can't promise tho)
Just email the scripts to me if you like. (and tell me what you want to do)

Cheers
Peter

The ads seem to be working now.

Oh what a surprise, they're for speed trap detectors :o

Just clicked on one in the forum, it worked but it opened in the same window which is annoying.

Not as annoying as having to use IE5 though, at home with Firefox I would have just middle clicked it. :x

I like the ads, they're tasteful and unobtrusive, and some look interesting too!
