I'm back - as me.

I tried restarting all sorts of things yesterday - but only now have turned off the router and reconnected to the telephone line.. That fixed it.

I have no idea why to this day the problem ocvcurred - but it was evidently something more local to me than I could see.

Thanks to all - and apologies for not even thinking to try restarting the router before (something I usually try when helping other people when trying to diagnose esoteric connectivity problems before I even look at software config!
