Apparently councils have been instructed to review speed limits in 2007. Whether any get revised upwards is debatable. I really like those villages and there are some where there is no posted speed limit apart from NSL. I find I am generally driving through the hazardous bits no higher than 30 anywa...

My declaration of interest: also approaching 60, recently became Qualified Observer with IAM, clean licence, no collisions from my fault since 1969. So I know I have excellent observation, awareness etc. I am also required to judge the driving skills of others and offer advice to improve them where ...

In the IAM we teach people to indicate when there is another road user in view who would benefit from the information - that may well include a pedestrian. Excellent observation will tell you whether you need to indicate or not. Furthermore we teach that you should not assume that a driver who is in...

If every driver was sticking to the posted speed limits then a speed camera would be no different to a sign advertising the local pub, for instance, but because of drivers' reactions to a speed camera it is pretty significant from a hazard point of view. We don't have many fixed cameras round here b...

So how would you resolve this moral dilemma? Suppose you have a close relative who is in their late eighties, their driving skills have deteriorated but they are convinced that they are still a good driver. Then they suffer a blackout (not in the car). What do you do? If they black out in the car an...

2 million vehicles without car tax (Vehicle Excise Duty). If my experience is anything to go by is it any wonder? I have been waiting in vain for the reminder which should have arrived in mid-January. So I logged in to http://www.dvla.org.uk to tax my car on-line, only to have it tell me "your ...

Some cyclists are selfish, for instance riding two abreast on a narrow road and not dropping into single file when a car driver is following. How do you safely pass riders on a club run on a twisty road? With patience, restraint and difficulty. Or last Sunday, following four cyclists on racing bikes...

I have Meindl boots for walking (bought in Leeds) and was looking at prices in Swiss shops in August. As far as I could see that although made in Switzerland they were not noticeably cheaper in their home country. The cost of MTBs in comparison seemed outrageously high in Switzerland!

I noticed in my local paper that North Yorks County Council is applying for 30 mph speed limit orders for the village of Deighton near Northallerton. I know it well and checked my speed when driving through earlier this week - in normal driving I briefly touched 35 but otherwise was around 30 or bel...

When approaching a junction with give way lines, many drivers just look right (well I assume they do) and if they think they can get away with the manoeuvre, turn left in front of traffic approaching from the right. They ought to realise that if they don't look right, left, right again the chances a...

I can see the justification for some roadworks speed limits but not others. For instance the A66 dualling roadworks between Scotch Corner and Greta Bridge at 40 mph is generally sensible with most drivers obeying the limit - camera signs but no cameras - although about a month ago I felt compelled t...

Reminds me of an incident on the B1278 between Sedgefield and Trimdon. The limit used to be NSL (60) but after an off-duty policeman left the road (no other vehicle involved) at an estimated 90 mph and died as a result the limit was reduced to 40 mph. IMO too low for this section of road.

I've just bought a hi-vis tabard to wear over my leathers. The wife's pleased as she thinks I'll be safer on the bike. I'll just watch carefully whilst I'm out on the bike and try and assess whether there are less SMIDSYs or not!

Last week I bought a new helmet as the old one was hurting my head. I ride a trail-bike so sit upright hence more wind noise. I went out to see how the (open face) helmet performed without earplugs on a very windy day and above 30 mph it was pretty noisy so I stopped and put the plugs in - bliss! Pl...

Of course our hills tend to be steeper and/ or more undulating than what you find in the Alps etc but nothing like as long and without any respite. I would suggest that Hartside from Melmerby is the nearest we've got to a mini-Alpine climb in this area, so going up and down a few times in succession...

Isn't it amazing how a backwater like Co Durham can have the right attitude?
Just as well the force didn't get merged into its neighbouring ones where speed cameras and scameravans are all the rage (or were until its NIPs were found to be out of order!). |
