If my memory serves me correctly I'm sure Paul had much contact with Dr. Linda Mountain in the early days of her research into speed camera 'effectiveness', which was the basis of the DfT report (before she went native - one suspects she got a quiet reminder as to who was funding her 'scientific res...

This was a brilliant announcement, and a sign that Paul's legacy lives on. He said that once hypothecation was gone, one-by-one councils would step away from Scamera Partnerships when they realised what poor value for money they were if the have to be funded from a fixed budget. Let us not forget th...

For most people in the UK (who actually take an interest in these things), Tony Blair's tarnished reputation as a politician stems from the lies he told over the Iraq war and WMD's. Thanks to the Daily Telegraph and the FoI Act though we now have the proof that from the very beginning of his tenure ...

I had already planned to do this - surrender the tax discs for refund for both our cars at th end of January and re-tax them on the 1st of Feb. AFAIK the new rates kick-in in March '09 (can anyone confirm that?). I reckon that'll save us about £300! EDIT to add... I've just done some research on thi...

I'm stunned and truly saddened. I consider myself privileged to have met Paul. In person one could understand why he was so successful in bravely taking on the establishment. Always calm and rational against shrill opposition. Paul was a man of integrity and is a true loss not just to the cause of r...

Let's put it another way: if the data is so good then why not get it peer-reviewed? Is it not worth doing so in order to shut George Monbiot up? Are you blind or just stupid?! How many times does it need to be said? Peer review is not conducted on data - it is conducted on the methodology used to o...

Possession of a driving licence is a privilege, not a right. So, so wrong. Possession of a driving licence is an entitlement based on a person meeting a certain set of objective criteria, which include being of age, passing the driving test, paying the required fees, then not exceeding the threshol...

Most of the work on the SafeSpeed page was carried out and edited by Guy Chapman who hardly has an unbiased opinion . Mr. Chapman has since become rather influential on Wikipedia, so his editorial indepen... |

Based on weepej's opinion. And, as David Coulthard once said, "Opionions are like arseholes - everyone has one (but some of them stink)". |

The message from the "Speed kills" lobby is actually rather a dismal one. It is 1) we have given up on driver training Training costs money. 2) we have given up on highway engineering Engineering costs money. 3) we have given up on trying to make roads safer to reduce the liklyhood of acc...

I've got to feel sorry for weepej. He (or she?) has fallen victim to the propaganda that tells us that road safety is black or white, switched on or switched off, and that the speed limit is the switch. Sad, simplistic, and the recourse of the hard of thinking. Also dangerous for us all. Either that...

What makes you think that it is not due to the FULL rate of fuel taxation ? As I stated (and you discovered) the rate is 20p less than petrol. The thing is, though, that biofuels create a dilemma for two reasons. The first is that they are effectively carbon neutral as the crops grown to create the...

A new Morrisons supermarket and petrol station has opened recently near me. The petrol station is selling Bioethanol at 2p/l less than unleaded. I dismissed the fuel, thinking that it was only suitable for a couple of SAABs and Fords that had been built to use it, but when my dad started asking me a...

Ticket offices have no duty to provide evidence. Their responsibility is to issue a ticket so that drivers who know they are guilty can pay it and avoid the fuss and time of a court appearance. Fisherman, while obviously a learned man, has shown from the above statement which small part of the bigg...
