Once again you have failed to answer the question. You gave me the impression that you were very familiar with the subject of training for recovery drivers. You made statements about recovery training and Traffic Officer training, comparing the two. I would not have thought you would need too much r...

I think that every HATO should go through exactly the same training as a recovery operator. Then spend perhaps six months on secondment to an operator.

Please explain what training you are talking about.

The Highways Agency is staffed with civil servants who know nothing about roads, vehicles, vehicle recovery, professional driving yet who pretend to know everythin g. ????????????????????????????????????????????????   You are now going from one unsubstatiated statement to another, w...

Thatsnews wrote As for training, you could try the Institute of Vehicle Recovery, AVRO, RRRG, APT Training, LARO, BSI (look out for PAS43) CarsQA, ATT (All Terain Training) and so forth. The training you would go for depends on your needs. Training for recovery operators has never been compulsory an...

Thatsnews wrote I have no doubt that every HATO is a lovely well-meaning person. But Five weeks training? I think you prove my point... Please, fill in a gap in my knowledge and tell me about training for recovery operators. Duration and type of training. Qualification achieved. I repeat my previous...

And yet the Highways Agency want to do away with all that, allowing HATO amateurs with a Range Rover, to hook up to...

I'm making an assumption here, but the impression I get is that some people resent Hato vehicle livery because they can't recognise the difference between a Hato 4x4 and a police Volvo/BMW. This causes them to slow down 'un-necessarily' extending their journey time by 20 seconds. Those who travel mo...

Not trying to labour a point, but why is a resemblance to Police vehicles a problem? [...] Balance that against the safety of Traffic Officers working on the motorway (and the people they may be protecting) and in my (admittedly biased) view it is a 'price' worth paying. There was a lot of consulta...

Across our area there are twice as many Roads Policing units as there are Hato vehicles. I can't comment on exact numbers in other areas, but since they deal with a much wider range of issues, both on, and off the road, I would expect their numbers to be significantly higher. I did see some figures ...

Pogo, not a problem :bighand: Not trying to labour a point, but why is a resemblance to Police vehicles a problem? The consequences you refer to are generally the result of numpties, as you put it, and these numpties are always going to cause problems. If it means a driver who is exceeding the speed...

I go back to the question I posed earlier.
What is the problem with Hato vehicles resembling Police vehicles.

Both Police and Hato vehicles are relatively rare on motorways I can't see either causing a significant problem.

We do park up at strategic points. Over the past year or so, statistics have been gathered showing the 'hot spots' where incidents are most likely to occur. What are these "hot spots" (what happens at them) and where are they located (general characteristics, not exact location)? Hot spot...

You are not police. Would it be OK if I drove round in a vehicle painted up in chequer pattern? After all, I'm not in the police either.

Yes, perfectly OK.

Nothing to say you can't decorate your vehicle with this pattern.

What is the problem with it resembling a police vehicle? You stooge along at 50 to 60, that's fine... Except too many numpties don't appear to know what the national speed limits are, assume that you are cruising at the limit and jump on the anchors.! Not really conducive to road safety, peace of m...

So: - you drive along at 50-60mph like the police; - you drive a vehicle which much more than "vaguely" looks like a police car; - almost nobody can tell at a distance who you are; - the police also have traffic officers; - you admit that a percentage of drivers will not pass you, "j...

malcomw wrote: Could you clear up one point for me. Do HATOs patrol the motorways (you know, drive along at 50mph in the inside lane ) or do you work from a parked-up base and get called in as required. Both :) We normally patrol between 50-60mph. Good TO's will adjust their speed to keep traffic fl...

Agreed, if both are affordable. Unfortunately police resources are being diverted away from roads policing, in favour of automated enforcement, at the same time. Agree with you on this too, but the resources are being diverted into other policing priorities, and the Government have made automated e...

Welcome Pinto! :welcome: I don't think anyone has a problem with HATOs per se , but with the dwindling (dwindled) numbers of traffic police, they seem to be offered up as some sort of replacement, which of course they can never be. HATOs perform the more routine tasks that traffic officers once wou...

I'm a serving Hato. I'm not a 'wannabe' cop. If I wanted to be a policeman, I would have joined the police. That goes for most of my colleagues. There seems to be a lot of anti Hato comment from people who don't understand what the role of the Traffic Officer service is. As far as I am concerned we ...
