This is a cognitive processing issue. It can be measured. -Define distraction, put different versions of it into a controlled experiment. -Compare distracted performance against non distracted performance. Why are people's attitudes to distraction being asked for? The discrepancy between good driver...

Have they actually comissioned a scientific study in order to rule out this possibility of damage? Surely the source of such revolutionary data will be cited in thier report? Or does 'no evidence' mean we could not be bothered to look for any? They did. I don't have the orginal copy because it cost...

Haven't seen the RAC report or listened to much of the media interest but there is an established link between obese drivers who drive high mileages and accidents through falling asleep at the wheel/fatigue vs attention. This is due to obstructive sleep apnoea, disordered breathing during sleeping. ...

I'm very interested in this. Over the last few years I have had maybe 3 'near misses' all at junctions or roundabouts where I have wanted to join traffic from stationary position or slow speeds. I've made my mind up that all is clear, have started to go and realised that all is not clear and a sharp...

Roger, honest post -respect you and others for opening up. As I improve, the thing I currently struggle with most is consistency. I have drives that I feel rightly proud of, drives that are OK but could have been more focused, and every now and again a drive which is completely ruined by a momentary...

Road Safety Minister Stephen Ladyman said the study was misleading as police figures were more accurate than hospital data. So if someone is hurt in a car accident, doesn't report it to the police and later requires hospital admission then the accident didn't happen? Somehow I doubt that the police...

Pretty conclusive results.

Speed cameras don't seem to be loved here in Kent...

No official words on the survey results that I can find.

Sometimes criticism like this can be a bit unfair. If a passenger is used to a large, quiet, comfy, softly sprung car with a big engine and smooth auto box then a firmer, swifter, manual car is always going to be less smooth unless you are a particularly good driver (which I'm not). I also find that...

Love Ashford Borough Council parking wardens. I try to have change in my pocket whenever I need it but this isn't possible every time. So the other day I park up, walk briskly to the nearest ATM, nip next door to the newsagent to buy mints to get some change, walk briskly back to car to purchase my ...

For me though Top Gear is still entertaining. I enjoy the banter amongst "the team". Despite enjoying cars and motoring I personally find car reviews in themselves very very boring. At least JC and co try to inject a bit of humour in them. Plus I'd much rather see a caravan being blown up then endl...

'Jumped the shark' a American term referring to the point at which a TV series starts to go down hill... Its normally my favourite program by far but this series seems to be increasingly about the presenters and their 'banter' rather than cars & motoring. Getting miffed, what was that rubbish ab...

I'm 40, and have perfect vision. Even 'perfect' human vision has pretty severe limitations. Peripheral vision is useful, certainly, but the resolution is VERY poor - try reading with it! Impossible! Often peripheral vision can altert us to road hazards - that's very important to safe driving. But m...

Using different cars hinders the process of speed perception by the driver too I imagine. But the question I always raise when any discussion around risk and speedo checking is that to my knowledge it has never been quantified. This is irresponsible given how easy it would be to clarify: -how long a...

In the Echo last night was a photograph of all the smiling volunteers for this scheme (so you can easily identify them?) with an article saying that the police WILL pursue "speeders" who have more than one warning letter. I just wonder what the police will do if you just flatly deny everything? Do ...

Outgroup homogeneity bias -'They're all the same those safe speeders...' Well we aren't, its as resoundingly sim...
