so I suppose its all about driver perception at the end of the day. Yes, but there's a clear inner lane and a clear (horizon-type) inner lane, it's the latter group who really annoy! Didn't know you could get SafeSpeed bumper stickers!!!! Don't know if you can...I've bought a "KEPT LEFT" middlelane...

Must admit, I don't hear much peeping in the UK these days. Apart from one place of course - the new-ish "Welcome to B&Q" (used to be called Crewe) roundabout. No matter what lane you take, you end up in the wrong one, either by your own (or someone else's) judgment. Then once you've proceeded t...

Thanks for the comments. Interesting about the floral tributes. Some people think they are maudlin and a sign of post-Diana frenzy, but whenever I see them I actually stop and wonder what was the accident, was caused it.....and what caused it IN THAT PARTICULAR SPOT. Agreed, they do heighten awarene...

Largish Australian-type signs have recently appeared on the A34 through Newcastle-under Lyme, promoting motorcycle awareness. See the following. Mega link So - the debate is open to you... is this a laudable attempt at promoting road safety....or another sticking-plaster approach? ps the speed limit...

Sotonsteve, just to clarify, are you saying you use it because you feel it's a better driving "experience" ....... or does it actually get you from A to B any faster? Or both, of course! :) Just curious! Personally we used it because it was the most direct way to the airport parking (and reco...

I hope that we are not justifying the middle lane hogger style of driving on the grounds of poor road maintenance.... given that we know that it is major factor in tail-gating. Bu this doesn't explain why you see middle laners on the M6 toll which is new and rarely frequented by the HGVs which crea...

IThe point at which this becomes more critical, is if instead of an HGV in lane 2, you have a driver or line of drivers, who fail to return to l1 having completed their overtake, and elect to take a "Grand Tour" of the middle lane of the M6. You are then faced with either a protracted overtake in L...

When stuck in jams, I am usually the only person to move to the left (or right, depending which lane) to let a biker through easily. And I have never had a nod or wink - feel a bit cheated! Why? Are you doing it for a reward? .....er, no! I was just sharing my (I think good) driving practices with ...

Was a passenger down M6 toll last week- sunday morning 4am it was £2.50. Coming back Friday night, thought it would be the same - but £3.50! Now can someone tell me why the cheap band is only 11pm to 6am. Surely a 8pm or even 9pm start would be fine. PS the signage coming on from T9 is awfully confu...

Middle lane owners are the bane of my life! My car isn't happy above 70 so I'm back to L1 sharpish, and not popular in L3! I'm absolutely sick of the MLOs boxing me in on L1 and my having to repeatedly cut out in front of them. I noticed a few weeks ago that electronic signs had started appearing on...

Quote: Let's say there is a truck in L2 of a motorway at 50mph
IMHO, the trucks shouldn't be doing this speed in the middle lane (especially when the overtakee is doing 49.5mph, lol)
Your case study is an example of how this causes confusion, danger, and ultimately, congestion. |

Thanks for the replies! I think in summary there are two concerns here - both personal safety and road safety. When diverted off the motorway it can be miles before you can find somewhere safe to pull over and get your map out (I shan't be trying the hard shoulder!) And I would feel very vulnerable ...

Yep, have several maps in car. But how to check maps when doing 60+ on motorway, slip roads or dual carriageway?
(Remember recently the woman who got fined for stopping on the hard shoulder to ask a police officer for directions when motorway was closed!) |

New member here - hope I'm posting in the best place! Coming along M62 late monday night and plenty of warnings (from M60 onwards) that J25-26 of M62 was closed. With 80 miles travelled and 40 miles from destination, I knew I didn't have to panic as diversions are always signposted....or so I though...
