The first part of my drive to work is on a B-road. Not too busy, undulating and with several bends. I always take a fairly relaxed approach (why stress to arrive at work 5 minutes earlier?). I guess my speed varies from about 30 to 50 mph, driving according to the hazards I see. Over the weekend, th...

Thanks for an inspiring post. I think you are dead right about goal setting - improves concentration and enjoyment. My goals used to be mostly related to time. Now often related to fuel economy which I find promotes planning ahead, smooth transitions, awareness of other road users. Interesting how t...

For me, the take home message from this thread is that concentration (or observation) is a more important variable than speed in defining safe behavior. Many years ago, stuck in a queue, I rolled into the back of a lorry at about 2mph whilst map-reading. Bonnet dented. Lesson learned. But I was well...

I get depressed when I see statistics like this. It's so bloody obvious. If we all give sufficient attention to the task of driving, accidents will be virtually eliminated because we will see the risks and react accordingly. We don't run into things on purpose, do we? So road safety initiatives shou...

The public cannot understand and will not respond to sophisticated messages. Look at the propaganda issued by the opposition: "Speed kills" "Speed cameras save lives" "40mph = dead child" Simple, effective, lies. I'd like to see SS campaign around a list of simple, effective "truths" eg > Most peopl...

.... I don't accept that we can replace responsibilities with rules. And surely that's the inevitable result? I'm confused. In an ideal world, I agree, there would be no need for speed limits as each road user would deliver on his/her responsibility to drive safely. Unfortunately, there are enough ...

longpod, I'm sure PC Milton was doing exactly what he says he was doing. I just wonder what is the best way to get stupid rules changed. I'm not sure it helps to have an enforcement group exempt from the rules they enforce. There are good reasons why the emergency services have to exceed speed limit...

Two possible positions to take on this one: a) Hope he's acquitted - clearly establish the fact that fast does not necessarily = unsafe b) Hope he's convicted - force the police to confront the reality of the laws they are happy to apply to the rest of us I see the merits of both positions. But as m...

Is there not a case for electronic speed limit signs that can be re-set as required at roadworks? 30 or 40 when it's required, switch back to 60 or whatever at other times. Yes indeed! These days it is so difficult to achieve both (a) drive safely and (b) stay within the law. In dormant roadworks (...

I guess we all perform 'additional' tasks when driving. Of course these reduce our attention and control, especially if things don't go quite according to plan. I am happy to defend eating an apple in the same way that folks have defended smoking. My own disposal technique for a (fully biodegradeabl...

I'm as frustrated as the next person by the classic scamera (inappropriate speed limit and hidden camera) but I wonder what others think of the following: Leaving Aylesbury northbound on the A418 there is a stretch of wide single carriageway with good visibility, 40mph limit, which I think can often...

I'd appreciate any comments on the following: I was driving northbound on the A34 between Oxford and Bicester one evening over Christmas. In no hurry and generally driving well within the speed limit. Signs warned of roadworks and a 40mph limit. However, there was no obvious hazard associated with r...
