Apologies if this has been discussed before but following on from the LED rearlamps discussion am I the only one who thinks HID lights fitted to an increasing number of luxury vehicles are at best a nuisance and worst a potential danger? HIDs have been around for a long while now, and available on ...

Other countries in Europe too - it just means "Proceed with care." It doesn't imply priority one way or the other, there may be other signs or road markings.

What about the related question: What's the effect on our own driving of the car we drive? I've been trying to answer the question myself, and I'm actually finding it quite hard. Putting aside the deviations from our "normal" driving style that may be imposed by dynamic limitations of the...

I saw a fine example of stereotyping yesterday. I was travelling anticlockwise on the M25 somewhere around J9 at about 8am, traffic flowing freely, so making brisk but safe progress in lane 3 (of 4), with a BMW 330Ci in fairly close company. Another BMW, a new 5-series estate with twin tailpipes but...

Hmmm..... Ferrari - 288GTO. Precursor to the F40 and much prettier - like a 308GTB on steroids. Porsche - 959 in white. The original four-wheel-drive supercar. Mercedes - Brabus CL-class SV12 S Biturbo. A bit of a one-trick pony but you can pretend you're at Santa Pod on every straight. BMW - Alpina...

When I got my Volvo S60, one of the first things I did was to get my dealer to turn the day running lights OFF.

I'm the pilot in command and I will decide when the lights ought to be on, thank you very much!

The 30 limit has served us well for years . It is the misuse of it that has caused problems . People are taught to drive "to the limit" - eg drive too slowly on a test and you'd fail - so newbies think that at all times they should be doing about 28 - even in a street lined with cars and kids on th...

I just got back from a few days' holiday in the west of Ireland (Shannon area). I didn't see any speed cameras but did observe the following... - Many speed limits (now metricated, so in km/h) are IMHO unrealistically low - Most drivers observe the speed limit - The overall standard of open-road dri...

... So my question is, what can I do to make life more comfortable for my passengers short of rounding every corner at 10mph and driving everywhere at 45mph? This isn't the best road in the world for surface condition and flatness, so was my old man just being fussy after too many years of not bein...

I think I made a thread about it here ages ago too. So you did, here . The rest of the images, including shots from underneath that bridge in both directions and a shot of the van from the otherside that reveals that the talivan is parked on a FOOTBRIDGE (which is also a marked bridleway) can be fo...

My real name is Mrs Gilmour! I’m sorry, then, Mrs Gilmour. By the way, are you related to Gary Gilmour, the American mass murderer who was shot by firing squad and whose eyes were the subject of a pop-song by The Adverts? I think you will find the gentleman in question was actually called Gary Gilm...

Ah, the A413 Wendover bypass, I know it well :) I didn't realise that's the photo location but you're right about the road width. There's easily space for two vehicles side by side in each lane - and then some. Is there a crash record justification for enforcement on that stretch? I recognised it s...

That's a little unfair IMO. The guy is from Bucks, home of Talivans that like to park like this: Ah, the A413 Wendover bypass, I know it well :) Three easy steps to making money: 1) Build an almost dead straight road, as wide as the runway at Heathrow, but with only two lanes, so a default 60mph li...

Click here for expert driving advice  Hehehe... most excellent! I imagine you will be considering a merger with CLARA at some point (the Centre LAne Residents' Association). I'd be less concerned about being stuck behind a lorry, than having lorries stuck behind me ... My car has a "space saver" spare tyre which is limited to 50mph. I was on my way down the M3 and running on the spare, and I was keeping the speed down, as I didn't want the spare to go the same way as th...

A slight tangent but with the new HID (High Intesity Discharge) lamps it is a legal requirement that they have washer jets but having seen a collegues with these, spraying water does very little to clean the lens, so why not wiper blades for headlights like some of the old Volvo's had ?? And not-so...

I've got a feeling that there's a huge point of principle here, but I haven't quite focused in on it yet. I've got these fragments: - social behaviour tends to be self optimising - most people do the right thing irrespective of the rules - rules give information to most and only usefully peanalise ...

A couple of years ago a scheme was introduced in London to reduce congestion, by using CCTV cameras to track down and fine drivers who clog box junctions. It seems that, overall, this has actually made the congestion worse... http://www.timesonline.co.uk/article/0,,2-2217605,00.html
