So, it's Christmas morning, and I've got to be in work (eight miles away) at 06.00. Options are looking pretty limited........ I've looked at alternative ways in to work (in case it's too icy for the bike and the wife wants the car), not just on bank hols but generally, and it's a non-starter. The c...

I don't see it as being about "beloved motor cars" (or bikes). It's about freedom of choice and democracy (which count for nothing with this Government). And if we DID all give up our cars, the country would collapse, because it's only the billions of pounds raked in from the motorist every year (an...

From the boys at MCN, believed to have originated at Pepipoo, the answer to the S172 demanding to know who was driving. For specifics, particularly legal precedent which should be quoted, see MCN (or perhaps Pepipoo), but in essence here's what happens: Do NOT fill in the S172- write on it "see atta...

There's some excellent stuff on the ABD website- go have a look. To summarise the words of brilliant scientists into very simple terms, they say: Yes, there is climate change, but this is down to the Sun. It happens in cycles, a cool period followed by a warm period, then another cool period etc. Th...

Balrog DON'T use main beam in daylight. When you're filtering or overtaking, it dazzles car drivers via the door mirror. Also, anyone looking DIRECTLY at you will find it much harder to judge your distance and speed- your headlight is so bright, that the rest of the bike virtually disappears; all th...

I'm not too worried about prestige/high performance cars in the outside lane; they've generally got such advanced chassis/steering/suspension etc that, as long as the driver has got half a brain, they'll just sail past. I've also found that quite a lot of these cars have drivers who can actually dri...

Dear Lord
I ask for two things
1) The driver pulls through, and
2) The scamera van is found to have been a causal factor.
Thanks for listening. |

I quite agree. Remember, though, that approx one third of the vehicles on our roads are not correctly registered, so even if you get the reg. of the offending vehicle there's no guarantee that it'll lead anywhere. The thing I find quite astonishing is just how much manpower, time and effort can be e...

"The system" is now heavily dependent on number plate recognition, and this level of dependency will increase. In order to "read" a number plate, the equipment requires that the characters are clear and unobstructed, in a certain layout, and of a certain font type and size. An educated guess says th...

So, a quick summary: Under age drunk stole a car using a mobile whilst driving total disregard for the law and everything/everyone else killed in the collision. At least it had a happy ending. I'd be quite happy to go and award the wall a certificate for conspicuous services to crime prevention and ...

Saw a similar article in MCN a couple of months ago, except it was a fairly main road that had developed pot-holes. Local councillor said "they'll slow the boy-racers down". Then, motorcycling MP Lembit Opik stepped in and pointed out that, in the event of a motorcyclist coming off due to a pothole,...

By Jingo, Oscar's right.
47% of women and 33% of men struggle to understand what the lights mean.
Glad the status quo has been preserved. |

Let's see what they say: "Speed is one of the major contributory factors in incidents involving young drivers". Nothing to do with lack of ability, lack of experience and totally wrong attitude, then. "Encourage positive attitudes to speed limits......." Hang on, this is sounding a bit familiar. "Re...

I take issue with the statement that " a survey of police records showed that most speeding took place on urban roads". An equally-likely explanation would be that the police presence was concentrated on urban roads, so the prosecution rate was higher in proportion to and as a result of their increa...

I failed to mention that virtually every street also has a Trafpol on a bike lurking near the junctions, just to make sure.
So all the mobile-phone using carnage-dealers also get away with it (unless they turn instead of going straight ahead) |

And, as I jumped on the bike at 05.00 this morning, with the temperature (adjusted for speed and windchill) somewhere around -15, the thought most definitely NOT on my mind (astronomically or otherwise) was "it's the first day of spring".

Having (temporarily?) lost the income stream from the 20mph zone on Tower Bridge, City of London plod have found a lucrative and non-negotiable replacement. The area around Bishopsgate/Liverpool street is littered with "straight ahead only" arrows at the junctions and traffic lights, and drivers who...
